The Dot Com market here is totally screwed Mate.. Seriously they are laying off people left, right and centre
Unless you are moving as a part of a job re-location thing.. In which case the accomodation is taken care of. Then don't even bother mate..
Si.. Email me or ring me and we can discuss..

How do I get one of those jobs where you can do it from anywhere in the world? I saw a programme on one of the satellite channels about this artist who worked from his house in Jamaica. Not much demand in Jamaica for network designers

Hi All
I'm thinking about moving to the US for 6 months to a year.
Originally I was thinking about New England or somewere similar.
Any advice?
How expensive is it to rent a house? Do you get much for your money?
Anything I need to think about?
Any suggestions on area? I don't want to be too remote, but want a fairly chilled out and relaxed area. The reason I was thinking of New England is that there are some really nice quiet towns, but New York is only a couple of hours away (depending on where you are of course).
Any advice would be gratefully received.
All the best

Simon,
I've lived in the US on a similar basis for 15 months, I can probably dig out some information I've kept forever for tax reasons etc if you want - email me offline if interested. The place I dealt with weren't cheap (but Hewlett-Packard picked up the bills) but they covered everything including all the shipping and packing. I was in California - I could recommend Northern Virginia too.
I assume you're OK for a Visa? I'm now married to an American who is expecting a hybrid British/American baby at the moment, so can get my Green Card sometime as I'm married to a citizen and responsible for someone who qualifies for citizenship.
Simon (back in UK now though).

Hi Chaps
Thanks for the advice.
Do I need a VISA? I'm not actually trying to gain employment over there. It would be as though I was on holiday for a few months.
Are there any areas that have nice cheap prices for renting houses, but are within reasonable driving distance (like 4 hours or something) of a decent city?
Thanks again chaps

Simon,
our company has just relocated it's US office and staff (including me) will be on a rota system going out there, as such we've rented a nice 3 bedroom town house, think it's about $600 - $800 a month, which is pretty good (or so I'm told)
As for visa, hmm, well, I think that you're only allowed to stay for 3 months then you have to go, think the visa type thing they give you on the plane states this. If you stay longer than visa permits then they will stamp your passport and you won't be allowed back in for a while (5 years was mentioned)
From what I've heard, to 'recharge' the visa you simply need to leave the us for a day, so one could potentially go to canada, stay for a day (maybe a weekend break) then come back and have another 3 months. Don't know if this would be legal, or even work.
