Question

I'm after a DVD player that is:

* Multi region
* Plays RCE DVDs
* Playe VCD & SVCD disks
* Plays MP3 disks
* In-built DTS decoder
* Co-axial optical output
* S-video output
* PAL60/NTSC spoofing would be nice, but not a necessity

Any recommendations on models and suppliers?

Thanks
Andy

Less than £150 ideally, although willing to pay more for a better brand or extra facilities that may be useful.

I've heard the Pioneer DV350 is a good buy £130 ?

The link above has specs, and I have to be honest and say I'm considering it, though I have no idea about the PAL-60 business

Thanks Jon,

My sister has that player at the moment. The only down side is that it doesn't have a built in DTS/DD decoder.

It's a very good player standalone player, but not the best when adding it to a home cinema set up!

Andy,

this is the one i changed from £650 worth of sony dvd that would do nothing but play uk dvds (though i did get it chipped for extra expense!) for, £98 inc vat!-

Scan 2500 dvd

Can't argue with the spec -
SC2500 DVD Player
Dual Decoding : Dolby Digital (AC-3) & DTS decoding.
Compatible to DVD, CD, VCD, SVCD, CD-R &CD-RW, and MP3 discs.
Dolby Pro Logic processing.
Built-in six channel 96K/24-BIT audio DAC.
Video outputs: Composite Video and S-Video .
Audio outputs: 5.1 CH, 2 CH, Optical and Coaxial digital output.
Supports system conversion: NTSC to PAL and PAL to NTSC.
Colour: Black.

Main Features:
24-bit PCM Digital Output Capability
10-bit Video D/A Converter
Automatically identifies the disc
Timer and auto power off
Memory Playback
Time search playback
Program Playback.
Selectable OSD
Picture enhanced
Zoom panning
Screen saver
Remote control

picture quality was no different from the sony, sound very little difference (i run through a sony dts amp anyway) and the menus were much faster on this than on the sony!

for the price its a great bit of kit, had mine 12 months with no issues, though i have seen in the newsgroups some people have had trouble with scan themselves.

Edited to say cos it doesnt say it above, that this is multi region and region coding enhanced out of the box as well

Thumbs up

Shops arte doing the deleted Toshiba SD210E at £119 at the mo. It won awards last year priced at £199, for the best player under £500.
Not multi-region, but an easy handset hack if you need it, apparently.

I would recommend the Toshiba SD220E, it does everything you listed and you can get it in multi region form for £119.95 from richer sounds.

Thanks guys, I've settled on this one for now: Umax Yahama 2100

Only £65 and it does everything I need. If it's not as good as I want, then it can go in the bedroom!

Talking

Watch the Toshiba's, I have a deregioned SD210e and it has problems playing VCD's, there is a know audio visual sync problem, it can be over come 90% by pressing a few buttons on the remote, but it's a bit of a pain. This also happens on the SD220.
Other than that it's a superb bit of kit and cant recommend it enough.
A good place to have a look is here http://www.dvdrhelp.com/.
do a search for prospective players and you should get loads of useful info.
If you need anymore info on the 210 let me know.

Ian,

No worries, I use VCDhelp (same site that redirects! ) and used it to help choose a new player!

So facilities are too important, like VCD playback!!

Cheers
Andy
