Just come back from a weeks holiday, so I left my Peugeot on the grass verge outside my Dad's house (not on the road). I have declared the car as being off the road (SORN) as I am selling it and currently drive a Scoob. The Peugeot was clamped and 24hrs later a truck arrived to pick it up to scrap it. My Dad had to pay £200, which I have now paid him back, to release the car, and stop it from being scrapped.
What annoys me is that I go to the post office when the renawal is due, to declare it off the road. The car is clearly marked up with For Sale signs, yet within 24hours the car could have been scrapped. Dumped cars sit on the roads for months before being taken away, people are driving around with no MOT, TAX or insurance and can get away with it.
Where do these people get off????

These days it pays to break the law than abide by it.

Honest law abiding citizens get turned over.

Look at police camera action.....you get caught doing 38 in a 30 and get 3 points and 60 quid fine.....a juvenile goes on a reckless car rampage and gets 5 points and 100 pound fine?????

where is the sense??

that is ridiculous. Last year there was a completely knackered Morris Minor dumped on the verge outside work for about 3 months, covered in police aware stickers. Eventually the council came and moved it - about 300 yards up the road and then dumped it back on the verge!

If you declare it off the road - doesn't it have to be off the highway? ...I guess unless the grass verge is privatly owned then that counts as highway...therefore, untaxed vehicles on the highway etc.etc.

Bummer though They could have contacted you first, that's what our guys here try and do..

could just be bad timin.

They may have a 'clean up' every few months and it just so happens it was the day after you went away.

We've jsut had 6 cars removed from where I live, they were not clamped just a sticker saying move it or we will within 7 days. I live in a block of flats and the cars involved had no tax, they were parked in vistor spaces but that is still deemed to be part of the 'highway' (communal access??)
Matt.

IF the car was not on the highway (in whatever form that is) then surely the council/police have committed a crime in touching/moving/stealing a vehicle without permission. Speak to your local police station clarifing that the location was or was not on the 'highway'. If it was not, then ask them to prosecute the offenders with whatever crime they advise has been committed.

Imagine if the car was a £20k car not being used and they scrapped it! (or even the car you had was scrapped!)

There are byelaws declaring it illegal to park on grass verges, so they could remove it for being in breach of that too

So it could be worth complaining about, even if it's just to clarify what is declared as OFF ROAD?

The highway is anything between private land i.e. from one guy's front wall on one side of the road to the other...this can include road/grass verge/footways etc.
