Exclamation

I have a Car with no tax. Which i have bought off a mate. I need to apply for a new logbook, as the old one has been lost. but in the meantime, need to use the car??

Is it possible for me to tax it?, or do i just have to drive round with no tax?

AFAIK, you can no longer tax a car without a valid log book. There's been some adverts about this on the radio recently - no excuses apparently.

If you drive around without TAX, the cops will pull you and report you to the DVLA. They will then fine you + recoup the unpaid TAX from whenever that vehicle was last taxed.

If you get caught again, the cops will report you to the DVLA who will impose a much heftier fine. Other than taking money from you, I don't know if they can take it further i.e. points on license, ban, etc..

When does the new law take effect of requiring your log book ?? didnt think it was till March ! if it dont start till March you wont need it.

oh and i dont think "tax in post" on a bit of paper in place of the disk works anymore. !!

Driving around with no tax is not a good idea. If you have applied for a new Log Book, the DVLA should be able to get this to you fairly quickly. Week to 10 days I should think - tops.

From the 1st February you need the V11 (or that may be the V10) RFL renewal reminder that the DVLA send to the registered owner, or the car's V5 logbook to tax a car. You can now longer apply for a new V5 using the V62 form at the same time as taxing the car like you could previously. You will need to go to the Post Office and get a V62 and apply for the logbook in your name, and wait for it to arrive, before you can tax the car.

In the meantime, no road tax on the car means you cannot use or leave the car in the public highway, so the car has to kept on your drive or in your garage until it is taxed. If you use the car, you are liable to be fined when caught, tax applied for posted in the window cuts no mustard I'm afraid.

This has all been put in place to prevent stolen cars, ringers etc being taxed for use by criminals or unsuspecting new owners. Plus it will also mean that they will have a better idea of who owns what, as at least once a year the registered owner only, will have to present themselves to tax the vehicle.

Having been in a post office overhearing a conversation just like this today, as above you need either the renewal form or the V5 - get onto the DVLA.
