"Torque Split" explanation

Can someone explain exactly how a "torque split" works for a 4WD car.
I'm changing the "50/50" scoob for a car with a 60% rear and 40% front split, but can't get it clear in my tiny mind how this actually works. I keep getting tied up with silly images of wheels trying to go around faster at the rear than the front.... which is obviously extremely silly.
From what I can gather most 4WD cars can apportion all of the torque to either axle if need be...

but scoobys are 60/40 split anyway.
