... a couple of weeks later I got a letter from the TV licence people stating they know I've just bought one! And because they have a crap system for monitoring licences, ie. there is a valid licence at the address I at, but not in my name, they've asked for £112 for a licence!

Obviously, I will write back giving them the current licence details... but was just a bit taken back by it, anyone else experienced this??

Apparently it is law now or something... so how do they get round Data Protection Act??

I don't remember signing any data release when I bought the TV...

Standard practise if you are not the name on the licence I'm afraid!

My licence is in the g/f's name and I got a letter when we bought our last tv and another one when I got OnDigital!

Just give 'em a call. I get the impression they spend most of the day responding to this type of thing.

Not sure about the DPA, but it is now a legal requirement. Retailers are threatened with a £1000 fine (IIRC) if they fail to take a name and address when selling anything capable of receiving a TV signal (that includes Video's and Set Top Boxes). If you fail to give one when you want to buy, there's a good chance you'll be refused service. (That's the way it worked when I was selling anyway!)

Presumably retailers should tell you what they're going to do with the information, but I don't think it gets passed on to any other 3rd parties. It never used to anyway...

Cheeky ******* these TV Licence people

When I moved into my new house after 6 months waiting for it to be built I was greeted with 7, yes seven, letters from the TV Licencing people saying that they wanted my money and I did not have a TV licence. Red letters threatening court action etc

Fact was, I'd been continuting to pay the TV licence on my previous property, so had actually paid more then was necessary.
I had called the to inform them of my move, so why don't they actually take the time to get a system whereby they can see who has/has not got a licence ? Fcukwits.

I've got the same one, but paid £2000 for mine a year ago. That's a great price.

Did you read the handling note "do not attempt to lift with less than 3 people"? 110kg of TV

Watch all tv channels from your Sky box and set the Sky output to RGB for the best picture (which is excellent).

*edited to add*

I can't think why anyone would spend this much on a tv, or want one so big. But obviously we did

YHM - didn't see your reply until now doh!..

Yes, I could never understand why anyone would need such a large tv until I watched a couple of action movies on it (great builtin speakers!) and played a few racing games on the PS2 on it.

Awesome init!

I'm not really a tele person, although I do like watching films. Next on your shopping list is a good amp and some propper speakers. The Sony 36 is so good, it would be a crime not to have these.

Grand Tursimo is something else on a big screen

Bearing in mind most people pay with C/C's I think a salesperson may notice if you give them a dodgy name! This aside, if they ask for a name and address then they're in the clear. Whether you give real one makes no difference to them...

What happens if you pay in cash and give no address?
Where I worked you wouldn't have walked away without giving an address on a TV. £1000 fine is usually considered to be slightly worse than losing out on the commission for a TV (unless you work in Dixon's/Curry's etc of course... )

Kelvin.

They have done this since way back in the 70's - had a little court appearance once for no TVL £12 + £7 costs!! cheaper than buying one!! Sorted
