Quite fancy driving a monster jeep up a glacier and swimming in the thermal pools. Also seeing the geysers and volcanoes, that kind of stuff. When to go? How cold is it? Can you get a round easily from the capital (not going to try and spell it ) or would you need accommodation in other parts of the island to see it all??
Any comments at all please!
Just to anticipate the muppets, yes - I know your Mum has been etc

Friend of mine went a few years back. He went right round the island, it's bigger than yuo think. Looks like it rained a lot from his photos. Not sure how cold it was, but everyone in the pictures looked well wrapped up.

It's a great place. The most famous hot pool is the blue pool which is on your right hand side as you drive in from the airport. The capital is a fun place, especially on thursday and friday nights ( hotel borg is well placed in the central square for all the cafees, bars, night clubs etc. There are some tours called the golden circle which include the blue pool, the famous waterfalls at the old parliament site (Thingvellir), and big jeep/ snowmobile stuff on glaciers , on Snaefell ( permanently snow topped volcano) visible from Reykjavik. Skiing can be had 30 mins drive from the capital (nov to may) but is actually better in the north at Akureyri ( ski season Jan to may) but not much daylight - floodlit & great northern lights tho'.
Go - it's a great place with unique scenery and wild people ( men are 90% scandinavian ie viking and women are about 80% irish /rest scandinavian genetically speaking - quite an exciting mix!!).
The summer season is short ie end May to end August really, but the long daylight hours make up for it.

I went a few years ago courtesy of FHM and Smirnoff (Huggy Bear came along too )
We did all of the above, white water rafting, Blue Lagoon, 4WD safari across rock deserts / rivers etc etc, skidoo racing across glaciers, whale watching, getting very pissed (all for free ).
The people are fantastic (the love the Brits but weren't too keen on yanks), the sun virtually never sets and there's LOADS to do.
It is an expensive holiday but worth every penny.
Go for it, you'll LOVE it.

Don't know about online - i picked it all up when I got over there - lots of it you can self arrange - just hire a car and go and do it ( sensible cars as well as monster jeeps are for hire). it's the only place that I've been to where the jeep drivers navigate by GPS - my driver in the centre of Iceland just set off staring at the hand held one on his lap and didn't look up for about 20 minutes
