Which accountant should I give all my money to??
#1
Well I have finally done it, Im going into contracting and I need to find a reliable accountant. To be brutally frank, Im crap at paperwork, so I need an accountant that will do almost all of it for me. Can anybody recommend a good accountant preferably around the North London or Hertfordshire area, and preferably with a very good understanding of the best ways to 'work' with IR35.
Can anybody also recommend the best approach with regards to setting up a company, should I go into an umbrella company (if so then which one) or should I have my own company with all the extra paperwork, or should I really not bother with any of it and force the agency to pay me direct and not through a limited company?
thanks in advance
JB

don't go to Giant. they're pants. I will change from them as soon as poss.
You always get the feeling you've been mailmerged rather than sent a letter from your accountant - I know that's probably the case anyway, but they might as well put 'Dear #12121,' at the start of letters.
I've been doing this 6 years now and my next accountant will be a local chap (if I can find one) who I can actually sit and talk to.
If you're going umbrella, then I imagine most big accountants would be fine, just compare prices.

Branners, you need to find a smaller practice with a/some knowledgable senior partners.
The problem with Giants is they charge you **** loads and your work is still done by trainee ex geologists/historians who wouldnt know tax releif from hand relief. Academic excellence is not always a guarantee for common sense and dillgence. They are also quite inflexible for the smaller clientele. We run rings round the auditors who come into our company
BTW, Thanks Dave and Squires, i dont offer such services anyhow.

Thats whay I was hoping to do, but so far I havent found any small practices near to me. Ideally I would like to find an accountant that is local and who I can visit on a regular basis to go through what I can claim on 'expenses' that month. When I was contracting before I hardly claimed anything on expenses so I got hit for tax all the way.

Just a quick thought. Why not take a week out (in-between contracts) and spend some cash and go on a course. I would bet you that you would quickly recoup the outlay, and then be able to do it yourself. Loads of help out there, as, like ScoobyNet, most people attempting to avoid IR35 are computer literate.

Branners,
Bruce Allen specialise in Contractors, quite a few of my mates use them and they will tell exactly how to legally reduce tax and get the most from your allowance and expenses...
Rgds, Alex
PS. They arent a hugh practice like Giant..
