Category C right-off???
#1
Can anyone help me? What exactly is a Category C right-off? I have just done an HPI check on a 2 year old Porsche and it came up as Category C - damaged / repaired.
Is it still worth considering at the right price and how much should be knocked off the price??
Any views?

As you said, it has been either damaged or stolen in the past but was deemed uneconomical to fix at the time by the insurers concerned and has been repaired since.
If the repairs have been done properly then there is no reason not to buy it physically, but you will have problems financially.
When it comes to re-sale, the next potential buyer will HPI it and find this out and be as wary as you are just now. You will have real problems re-selling it for its normal value.
Also, your insurance company might be a bit sniffy about covering you to drive it, i would check with them and get a written quote before you buy it.

Cat C is accident/panel damaged but uneconomical to repair.
I had an Audi coupe that was a cat C and had been rear ended damaging the bumper, lights, tailgate and exhaust. At the approved repairers the quote exceeded 50% of the cars worth and was therefore written off as Cat C. I bought it and fitted the required parts from a scrapper and had a perfectly good car.
The problem comes when you want to sell it, as you have found it comes up as a write off, you are suspicious and so would a prospective buyer be. Has the seller got details of why it was written off/photo's/old quotes? Does he have the service history (usually sent to the insurance co.), does it LOOK legitimate and was it properly repaired (approved dealer/repairer)?
It is possible to get a car removed from the cat C register by having the repair approved by a certain body, similar in principle to the SVA for kit cars (not sure who), but it could be worth investigating.
Hope this helps

Cheers for the help so far guys. I am just toying with the idea at the moment because it would get me a newer car than I could otherwise afford!!
This car had side damage. Seller has invoice for repair which included a new door, sill and wing. No original service book but a fully stamped 'replacement'. Lovely looking car in good condition.
My real problem is what is it worth. I don't mind selling it for a 'cheap' price as long as I pay a 'cheap' price for it...but I'm not sure how cheap that would have to be!

cat D is when the damage is not as bad as cat C,
one example: a new car has a accident, some insurance co.
will replace the car with a new car rather than repair it
and the damaged car gets written off as a cat D.
but ive seen some cat D which look worse than cat C
