Arcade Games / IT People/Best game
#1
Most of my mates in IT were all big into arcade games in the 80's. Do you think there is a direct correlation between gamers and IT bods.
This would certainly stick it to all those idiots who went around saying how it'll ruin all the youths of the day who played it.
Anyway whats the best most outstanding original game of all time, only one vote and anyone who goes for GORF better get their coat

i remember when I were a lad....
the best arcade game had to be the original Street Fighter. It was different, cool (when you learnt the special moves) and spawned many sequels and inferior copies!!
Or was it R-Type??
Or Afterburner??
Or Outrun??
Or Double Dragon??
Or Kung Fu (with the double joysticks)??
Or 1942??
Or Rampage?? (three player, monster detroying buildings)
Or Super Sprint?? (three player one was best)
Or Gauntlet?? ("Elf needs food....badly", etc)
Oh god, that's what I did with my childhood!!!

Spectrum was a nightmare, remember all that fiddling with the volume control on your tape recorder when you made copies from your mates original games. Bloody nightmare. Then the screen was just blank out, or typing in games from lisings in magazines using that keyboard......aaaarrrgggghhh

It was actually the reason I got into IT, I started as a commercial apprentice and was put into IT first out of the others because I had a Home Computer, I never left that department and no-one else got in at the 6 month rotations. I owe it all to big Clive !!!

Agree with Fosters...
Has to be ELITE on BBC Micro. I spent way too much time playing that rather than getting a life. I even sent off my registration card when I had achived ELITE status and received an ELITE badge.
Fosters, did you ever finish Castle Quest?? I could never get past the bit with the wand. I didn't know where to go from there.
We also had Citadel. Excellet platform game with loads of levels. We also had Aviator and REVS (with the additional tracks disk for Snettaton, Donnington and a couple of others.
What about Sentinal?? I still have the BBC in the garage some time. If anyone wants it...

A top 80s arcade machine was 'Track and Field' by Konami...
In fact, I've ended up digging out International Track and Field for the Playstation...I'd forgotten how much fun it was. While we're in the mood, anyone else played this and, if so, can you remember any of your records?
Oh, and no cheats with autofire joypads.

I don't remember finishing castle quest - it was a bit tricky.
I got to elite and never got any bloody badge! Did you ever use the expensive military lasers you had on the wings? nah, nor did I!
I had a bit of a small network going around 1984/5, so I'd accumulated more than 3000 games for the beeb. My dad rewired the tape drive so I could play/record at 4800baud. I had contacts in NZ, Oz and the US. My parents did get a bit concerned with all the foreign mail!

Supersprint - cos I've fond memories of doing a conversion for the Amiga in my student days!
Ah, 68000 assembler with copper and agnus - those were days.
Apart from that, got to agree with Fosters and Nimbus - Elite on the BBC B. I remember the day someone came over with a tape with 'Elite' written on it - didn't know I was about to witness one of the best games ever. Then I got the Hard Disk version with the missions and it got better!

3D Timegate (Quiksilver) on the Spectrum 48k - my first computer and first game.
The Hobbit (Melbourne House) on the Spectrum 48k. Finished it too!
Summer Games I & II, Winter Games (Epyx) on the C64 - used to get the lads over for a mammoth session on that.
Marble Madness (EA) on the Amiga1000 (before those namby pamby A500 came along, pah!)

Military lasers.. went through ships hulls like a knife through butter...
When I got a bit bored with legal flying I used to do my favorite trick..
Launch from the corrolis station then reduce speed. Switch to rear cannons then start shooting. As the police ships exit you can just sit there and blast them. When you get too far away, just do a 180 and use the front cannons. Eventually some would get by, then it would get interesting

ahhh, retrogaming, how do I love thee, let me count the ways.
SuzyQ has a NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) and I must say that I really enjoy playing Super Mario Bros. 3 and Gaunlet II, brings back memories.
Ali is also well into the NES, which is the main reason I get to play with it, as I'm showing the kids how it's done, well, it's round the other way actually, she kicks *** when she plays Mario.
My faves?
* Speedball 2 on amiga
* Elite on 48k Speccy and Amiga
* Exile on Amiga (mate had it on electron, was ace) - anyone every complete this on amiga?
*Turrican on Amiga
* Cyberniod 1,2 and 3 (I think) on 48k speccy
* Dan Dare on 48k
* Hypersports in arcade!
and the best till last
* Daley Thompsons Decathlon on speccy. How many fingers did you hurt and how many keyboards did you go through

Has to be Defender followed closely by Elite on the BBC. Defender was the only game that I ever reached the point where the controls were second nature. I racked up some massive scores.
Elite - I always regret never having a disk drive so that I could try the missions.
Nimbus, was Castle Quest the Acornsoft adventure game on the BBC where the first person to solve it won a prize. If it was, then a m8 & myself spent a weekend cracking it to get the answer. Sadly we didn't win...

Fug me - I can remember when the original PONG first arrived on these shores!
Scramble was my favourite - managed to crash an arcade version by going round 6 times and getting over 100,000 - it only went up to 99,999!!!!

Track & Field. Excellent laughs playing it in West Croydon at the Rising Sun on a glass topped table.
Scientifically proved that one pint of beer is performance enhancing but after that.... the descent into cabbagery was rapid.
The Hobbit on Spectrum, bah never got beyond "You are in the Thorin" in the wood elves jail. Bug ridden piece of junk.

Arcade game - Defender
Home Computer 'action' game - Elite (esp. with 6502 2nd processor version)with
'Revs' a strong contender for 1st place
Most innovative game - World's first multi user adventure game (MUD), Which ran on East Anglia university's DEC 10 'Mainframe'. Anyone ever play that?.
Cheers,
Alex
