Asked the same question a couple of weeks back
Ended up ignoring all the advice to get an Epson and bought a Canon S820 for £199 including full ink tanks (uses separate colour tanks).
prints up to a4, borderless, etc.
Absolutely delighted with the quality

I bought the Epson Stlyus Color 950 for £380
This is the dogs bollox printer
You can put a roll of glossy paper on the back and attach a little cutter to the front and it will cut and trim your photos and catch them in a little bag, also prints A4 etc
Oh yeah, you can put white faced CD's in the front tray and print directly onto the CD surface

Personally, I've given up using any of my printers, and take the images into either a local lab, or Jessops (depending on whether it's work or not), and the prints are superb. No wastage, and probably cheaper than doing them at home.
However, if you feel you must get a 'photo quality' printer, there's nothing to touch the Epsons, and that's coming from someone who has always been an HP guy. They do use a little too much ink for day to day printing, IMHO, but their print system completely eliminates banding, and I've yet too see results from any other brand that can match them for quality.

just bought an epson stylus photo 895 including an LCD screen from Dixons or Currys on offer for £139, these have now been replaced with a newer model which is about twice the price
the quality of the photos are just fantastic but remember to use epson photo paper as I tried some "PC line" brand but the quality was so bad it's a waste of money
