Thanksgiving is from the Pilgrims who landed on the Mayflower in the US (as it is now) giving thanks to the native Americans (Indians) who helped them survive their first winter.

It is normally held in the US on the fourth Thursday in November. The Canadians hold it in October - the 14th this year.

Why is it held in November then ?

If I was celebrating surviving the winter, spring would be the appropriate time

Why is it held in November then ?
The first winter was a disaster for the Pilgrims. A lot of them died due to the lack of food. The next spring, the Native Americans taught the Pilgrims how to grow food, and at harvest time (November), they held a big feast to celebrate their success. Thanksgiving was officially proclaimed a holiday by President Lincoln (16th President) during the American Civil War.

Canadians also have Thanksgiving. They have it in October because they have an earlier harvest.

Americans - why?
Well the Pilgrims were driven out of England (and Holland)due to religious persecution. That explains some of it...

I'm not loud and obnoxious (sober), but my WRX is!

The obnoxious stereotype is caused by the people who live in certain areas of the country. I have outlined these areas in red, as shown on this map:
