IMHO rear mounted bike carriers are a definate no no unless you have it mounted on a tow bar and even then debatable, especially for 3 bikes !!!!
I put mine on the roof using Thule kit - this is good stuff and it's modular too so you can use it with multiple cars. I just needed an additional 'foot pack' to use it all on a Jeep.
The feet will lock the roof bars to the car and the 510 bike holder then locks the bike to the holder and the holder to the roof bars which is pretty neat.
I also find it much less fuss than a boot mounted rack - all that messing about with straps & flapping trailer boards......
BTW - If you've got an STi then steer well clear of anything on the boot - it's aluminium and won't take much stress.......
Cheapest place I could find is Roofracks but it still ain't cheap - will be about £250 for 3 bikes. These guys will also provide matching keys for all your locks which is nice once you have a 3 sets of bars for different cars, a roof box, ski holders & 4 bike holders..........

The carriers held by straps are pants. Towbar one's are fine for 1 or 2 XC bikes, be a bit more careful if you're carrying more than one DH machine.

Yep think i'll have to go roof mount, this wont be for state of the art lightweight mountain/racing bikes, its for my rapidly growing raleigh chopper collection!

I use a Paddy Hopkirk one on the Sierra because it can be mounted high up on the tailgate, above the tail-lights. But I would go 555 HOT's way if I was carrying bikes with the scoob, mine's a std UK car & the boot skin feels to flimsy to be hanging that sort of weight off.

I have a Blackburn towbar mounted one, it isn't the cheapest (about £180 from memory) but it is VERY sturdy and regularly takes 3 full-on (45-50 pounds a piece) downhill bikes. I couldn't recommend it enough, it is absolutely top notch.
