A friend from work was sitting in some traffic on the way home last night. It just so happened that she was outside a firestation (Sighthill, Edinburgh as it happens) when a woman in another car (travelling the opposite way) saw the fireman and tooted her horn.
The firemen all looked up and started waving, so she started waving back.........
.......and drove straight into the back of a car sitting in some queuing traffic
All the fireman came rushing across, but since everyone was OK they just moved the car off the road and left her exchanging details.
Nearly wet myself when she told me

MattN: Actually the only proper use of a car horn is to 'let others know you are there', so in this case the use of the horn is correct. However you can be prosecuted for it's use after 11pm and before 6am.

Sheepsplitter - it is to let other road users and pedistrians know you are there, not people sat around a fire 20 ft away in a car park.
So you wouldn't mind me parking outside your house and sounding the horn just to let everyone know I was there?

MattN: Yes I would object, because there is no public highway next to my house.
I was talking about the technicality of the person beeping to let 'them' know he/she was there.
