Projector Slides to PC?
#1
Anyone tried/bought a scanner that transfers still slides to digital pictures?
Friends has a number of old slides and would like to get them on the PC for easier viewing..
She has only seen one scanner to do this so far and it was 170notes.. ouch..

My dad bought a good one, my Grandad was an avid slide photographer and home movie maker (old cine films) so we wanted to get the stuff onto computer.
I'll find out what he got, it seems very good to our inexpert eyes at least.
A good tip for getting old cine films transferred to video: donate your films to the to The National Film Archive, they keep the film in ideal conditions and do the video transfer for free.

I've got a film-scanner - a Nikon LS-40, which scans 35mm negative strips, and also does slides. With an optional adapter you can also scan APS films with it. It cost me about £500. It's superb and produces scans at around 3500x2800 of incredible detail and quality. If you want to see some examples, email me offlist and I'll give you access to some of the hi-res images on my gallery site.
If you buy one, I'd recommend you use VueScan rather than the software that comes with the scanner. It's widely accepted to be far superior to most manufacturers' own software! It's got a slightly strange GUI, but it's worth persevering, as the results are superb.
Check out the film scanners info on Tony Sleep's website. It's got loads of useful info and links, and is also the home of the filmscanners email forum/list, which is a good place to get loads of info.
If it's only a few slides which need scanning, I could possibly do them for you and cut the results to CD. It's quite a laborious process though, so I couldn't do hundreds!!!

Cheers I shall have a look at Tony's site.
I think it is too many to get you to do but thanks for the offer..
I would estimate there must be about 1000slides.. have thought about paying to get them transfered as they are old slides and none are being taken anymore so it would be a used to do the 1000 and never again..
The original idea was for her to buy it as a present for her Dad so he could transfer all the old family slides but it is looking less of an option.
Thanks

Okay, Yeah, 100 would be too many.
Check out Imaging Resource too, it's got very good reviews of the various scanners on the market.
I'm fairly certain that there are places which will scan negatives/slides and put them onto CD, but they're probably fairly pricey. It's the reason I bought my scanner - decided that getting boots to put the images onto CD at £5 a film would be too expensive. It's paid off - I've scanned 3,500 photos in the last 2 years.
Worth asking in Jessops or somewhere if they do a commercial scanning service though....
