Whilst waiting for Emmerdale to finish (missus loves it)so I could put the PS2 on and play 'Devil May Cry' (Stunning game)(And we BOTH wear the trousers in this house she just fills them better than me) I happened to notice that Emmerdale looked a little...well...different. Like they've started to use some new filming technique or something. The lighting's different etc etc
I mentioned this to the Missus and she howled with agreement "Yes it DOES look different!" Grabbed my leg (Maybe I'll get some tonight) and resumed watching the television....
What do you think? I think we should be told....

I've noticed the difference in the quality, the image is not as 'glossy' as normal and they seem to have applied some sort of 'matt' effect, i guess it's to give it more of a realistic feel rather than it looking like it was filmed in a studio.
Don't know what the technique they have used to create this effect is called though, looks odd in my opinion, at times it looks like you are watching the programme over the internet (a bit like a video conference link)

I'm told (on good authority) it is something to do with refresh speeds etc. so that it is more compatible for wider showing.
Usually happens when they are about to export the program overseas to somewhere that doesn't use our version of PAL or PAL at all. Usually the USA.
I don't know one way or the other but sounds resonable.
Cheers

I think this usually happens when they start filming with digital video cameras.
I saw one of those 'how stunts are done' programmes once and it featured some sequences from a James Bond film. When they showed the sequence as shot from the film cameras, it looked great. When they showed it from the TV cameras it looked sh1te and unrealistic.
