Odd one this. My wife taking kids and their pals to cinema yesterday. Light traffic south of Guildford with two cars in front. Lead car hits pheasant, which stays in road fluttering etc (possibly dead already).
Car immediately in front of Mrs L slows right down and weaves to deliberately run over said poor beast. I am assuming act of mercy but was this a bit OTT? You can imagine kids not too happy about all this. What would you have done? Perhaps I am getting a bit soft in my old age. David

Probably the right thing to do, although depends how badly injured it was - pheasants are seriously tough birds and it may have just been stunned. Better to stop and have a look at it. Leaving it squashed in the middle of the road is not very nice for everyone else to see.

I would have stopped, boshed it on the head, put it in the boot and eaten it in a week or two. One time we did this and when we got to destination, opened up the back of the van and the poxy pheasant flew away.

Isn't it considered poaching if you run over a pheasant etc. and then take it home to eat?
I heard that someone got into trouble moving a deer which had stepped out in front of them........

Strictly speaking you are not allowed to pick up fresh road kill and claim it for yourself, but unless you are right in the middle of a game reserve, I would say the chances of being nicked are slight.

Did a Hare once, straight through the front grille & rad on my Mk I golf.
Clarebabes, it's only poaching if you get caught doing it

worked in Epping Forest for sometime, knocked over a deer, it was unconcious but alive. Was hardly going to leave it there in the hope the person behind was going to take it to the vets so we put it into the boot & took it to hospital, were i understand it made a full recovery. Awww
