bug eyed is right it stands for denari, afaik - an old hebrew form of cash.

I was asked to day at work, what did the d meen after money in the good old days.

I was asked to look on the net but thought this might be a quicker way.

eg 5d 10d we have p now for pence but know whan knows what the d was for.

it doesnt mean anything just the old symbol for the imperial penny as far as i know.

The "d" was for denarius, the medieval English silver penny. Useful quiz knowledge if you are sad as me!

From the Royal Mint website:-

£ = 20 shillings (sh)

sh = one shilling of 12 pennies (d)

d = one penny or two half-pennies or four farthings

So I was wrong when I said "s" indicated shillings, "sh" did.

shilling was a sign like this i think 3\ with a dash on the right of the line.
