I hate zoos, they are sooo far removed from where the animals should be.....in the wild. Seeing a lion in a cage is pointless you might as well go and look at a stuffed one.

I agree.

Zoo's are very useful for conservation of rare species, where they can be protected until the numbers go up. But seeing animals cooped up just so kids can go 'ooooh' is sad.

Then again survival of the fittest says that animals that are dumb enough to get caught don't deserve to live. If you adhere to the theory of evolution then our treatment of animals is just fine as the stupid ones get put on show, and the ones that adapt or escape should survive.

Just think in a few years of human driven natural selection we could have invisible lions that can pick locks..

some kid was rapping on the triantula tank with his fist and laughing until I told him that is what I would do to his head if he did'nt stop.

Oh yeah and the "At least they are not stuffed" debate is rubbish as I would rather be stuffed than couped up in a cage for my entire life pacing up and down.

The worst is banging on the side of fishtanks. Although after a while it does'nt seem to bother the fish that much. Maybe they go deaf from all the little kids banging on the sides?

By visiting zoo's you are endorsing their existance.

Don't go to them and then thay will cease.

Ive got some triantulas...but they dont roar, even when I poke them with a stick. They just sort of squeek.

And most of the time they might as well BE stuffed, cos they dont move. But then I havent had to feed them for 4 years now...maybe thee is a connection?

If you went intending to take photo's of wire fencing, why pay the money to get in there in the first place?

The garden centre would have let you in with a camera for nothing

Cool

I'd say the photo is intended to focus on the chain-link in order to bring forward and maximise the impression that the magnificent animal behind is indeed incarcerated against it's will and that we should all stop and think about what that desire to imprison says of our pysche.

I don't like zoos either nor Safari Parks. The animals should be in the wild where they belong. The desire or reasoning to bring them to places where they do not naturally reside in order to educate the population who are unable to visit their original habitat is also a week argument.

There is an argument for aiding breeding of rare species & the only other argument, is to keep them away from bloody humans

Where ?

I think (not taking sides) that many Zoo's counter-arguement is that all their animals have been born in captivity so would be unable to survive in the wild. (Horse's aren't unique in having to be taugh to hunt ). The Zoo itself is a valuable resource for teaching todays children about the diversity of nature close-up. Most probably can't tell the difference between a zombie on a playstation game and a zebra on the Wildlife on One.

It may not excuse the original removal of the animal several generations ago from the wild - but if all Zoo animal were instantly relased now - they'd die - 'cos Keeper Bob wouldn't feed 'em everyday.

interesting counter arguement, i suppose the kiddies could learn all about the behaviour of animals kept in captivity ... "Why is that Gorilla drinking it's pi$$ mummy ?" ... "Doesn't the bear look funny swinging it's head from side to side and chewing it's paws off daddy ..."

most educational ...

Jason Crozier did you see that documentary on that Zoo in russia a while back?

This was a similar thing to what you mentioned but insted the gorilla was being sick, eating it and then doing it all again.

Have to disagree - a well run zoo serves four purposes:

* breeding animals species to relase into the wild/maintain the exisiting population so the extinction threat is less;

* research purposes to learn more about the animals and assist the above;

* education purposes, to ensure the next generation understands the threats to the wild animal population and the same mistakes aren't made over and over again;

* Finally - raising money for overseas work to maintain wild populations.

TBH, more damage is done by tourists going to Africa etc. on "eco-tours" to see the wild animals - animals aren't breeding (stress), natural habitats are being destroyed, natural resources are being wasted.... It's crueler (is that a word?! ) doing these things...

Btw - I'm not saying every zoo is good - some are shocking I just don't think it's fair to tar them all with the same brush

Jen

P.S. Sti in serious thread shocker? Or have I completely missed the point?!

Oh for fcucs sake Tiggs,

If you have a serious point to make about zoos, do it in your own name.

If not, I can only assume this is another thread designed to provoke a response, nothing more....LOL..

For the record, before I close this thread, some "zoos" have done huge amounts for wildlife preservation
