Red face

Further to my recent thread asking for advice on dental care, I have just returned from my visit to the emergency dentist. They have patched me up for now, and given me three options for what I can do with my front teeth.

The one that will be the most successful is to have Titanium implants (pretty cool sounding IMHO), but they cant be done on the NHS. And the cost for 2 new front implants???

£80 consultation fee, then £1500 EACH!!! £3080!!!! Thats Three Thousand and Eighty Great British pounds!!!!

I could buy a bloody new (trackday/runabout) car for that.

Where can I sign up for dentist training

Last time I looked (some time ago) you could get new teeth actually screwed into your jawbone for about £1,000 each.

Carl - that is the same thing.

They screw titanium plugs into your jawbone (ouch!!), a bit like when you use rawl plugs in a wall. You then have to wait 6 months, hilst walking around with titanium pins sticking out ya mouth.

They then screw crowns onto the titanium poles. Sounds pretty cool, but not for £3k. WOnder if they do special "Subaru-sponsored" crowns, you can screw in yourself!!

I thought the deal was that while the 'sockets' were setting in your jaw for 6 months you wore some false teeth over the top?

Apparently lots of the top models have had this done (I was considering it when I damn nearly knocked a tooth out after an argument with a lorry -- fortunately it stayed in and still appears to be 'alive' 10 years later)

There are, IIRC, only a few that can actually do this in the country. Lets just say people pay alot of money for their teeth fixing.

oh and

The other two options are tricky:

1. Grind down 2 perfect teeth and bridge accross them. Problem here is that one of the good teeth has a pretrusion on it (another small tooth sticking out the back of it), which may hold a nerve as well. Hence grinding it may lead to similar problems to what I have now.

2. As above, but stick bridge to other teeth with metal wings ( ) - they tend to fall off apparently.

So anyone fancy sponsoring me for something - bike ride, trackday, bungee jump? I could always film the operation and broadcast it on the web £5 a view anyone?

Has anyone here got,or know of anyone who has these titanium implants.Myself,i lost my front 4 teeth in an accident about 15 years ago and have a plate. Not too keen on it though.Have heard about implants but would like to know from anyone who has them or knows of anyone.

Apparaently you have to maintain a high level of mouth hygene.

I know David Bowie has them at the front. They do look a little on the big side IMO.

Thanks
SS.

Talking

I have a friend who had a titanium post. It then bent, and she had to spend several appointments getting the bent one out of the jaw and replaced with a second titanium post. She didn't overly enjoy that, apparently - no idea why She didn't mention hygiene issues over and above what the dentist will normally tell you when you have fillings etc.

I thought paying £300 each for a pair of root canal treatments was bad enough, but £3k. To quote everyone else

There are less painful ways than implants to sort that type of problem. I know people who have that type of thing. Unfortunately, I cant tell you about it or I get flamed by an English dentist...

I would Pete but I don't do implants.
Personal experience is the failure rate is too high for my liking.

You know, looking at your island from here, it's all the same to me, Doc. But you're right, I should have said British.

Have fun at work
