People dont understand I prefer to add it to fuel for years but you get the comment "we pay too much tax on fuel anyway, blah blah blah". Yes I agree we do but if there are for example 5 million cars on the road and say £150 a car a year in tax (doesnt include bikes and lorrys ) thats £750M minimum in lost government revenue they would have to generate that from somewhere else, ie VAT or income tax increase, tax on fuel, you tell me ????.
Tax on fuel is not better but fairer IMHO, I have two cars (scoob and a runabout) and pay £300 a year in tax and cant drive them both at the same and in totla dont do 10K miles a year. Someone may do 50K miles a year and pay £150 in tax whats fair about that .
It makes people think twice about just nipping round the shops when they live 50 yards away or taking litle Johnny to school which is 100 yards away or running a car full stop. I agree a better public transport system is required as well, how are you going to fund that ????
Just my opinion

just payed £160 for 1 years road tax, what the hell does it pay for???
don't they get enough money from fuel tax to keep the roads in the not so good state they are in???
better idea for road tax in my opinion is to pay a driving licence fee,if you don't pay it you are not allowed to drive a car on british roads.
have you lot got any better ideas???
apart from scrapping it which will never happen!!!

Skunk,
It already has been added to fuel, many times over. I spent £2000 on petrol last year, of which 80% - £1600 - is tax.
Compared to that, I don't find that road tax bothers me half as much as, for example: fuel tax, speed cameras, congestion charging or any one of the Government's other ideas to make my life that bit more miserable than it otherwise needs to be.
What does bother me, is that it's a tax disc that has to be displayed on the car, and not an insurance disc. One indicates that a fee has been paid. The other would indicate that damage to people and property caused by the car will be paid for. Which is more important?
Andy.

Absolutely right ChrisP, I've been saying this for years but does anyone listen?
Also it's about time someone took the government to court for not spending the money collected from road tax on the bloody roads
