Chav = ned = bam = **** and so on. Basically idiots with caps and tracksuits (usually not used to get into clubs) that go around looking for fights or someone to buy drugs from

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone.
Of course we completely ignored all of your good advice given (because I forgot to print off this page) and followed our noses.
So our night ended as follows. Started off with a couple in the hotel (Marriott, next to bypass) and jumped into a taxi. Taxi driver very helpful, explained that the students were away and that Thursday normally ticks over. Couldn't remember any bar names, so driver dropped us off outside Edwards, apparently one of a chain of bars. Not bad, pretty busy, good deals on pitchers, nice totty. Moved on and walked to the Grass Market. Everywhere very quiet, Irish pub empty. Walked past Espionage, remembered the name, made a mental note. No action to be seen, and couldn't be arsed walking back, so dived in a taxi and asked driver to take us to a decent bar. Bonus! Found a tenner on the back seat of taxi. Driver dropped us off outside Opal, a frightningly trendy looking bar for us scruffs. Looked promising at first, but 3 quid entry fee, and another 3 quid for a cold but rather flat HALF of Peroni. Time to move..
Like McDonalds, you can never go wrong with Wetherspoons, just across the road. Cheap double JD & Cokes sorted the job out, and come 12.00 it was time to move on to the Grassy Knoll and Espionage. Unfortunately we got a little lost, and stumbled past Hooters. Well you have to pop in for a quick one don't you? Had a drink as well.
Ended the night in Espionage. Was a bit disappointed: odd looking totty, strange music and, well, we weren't really sure, but there was something. Decided to call it a night at 2.00 and popped back to the hotel for a nightcap in the bar. Set us up fighting fit for a fine couple of days rallying. Not exactly a decent pub crawl, but not a bad night all in all.
Even managed to get the rally car to the finish as well.

Loads of good places...
Depends on what you want -
Anything on the Royal Mile or Grassmarket for traditional haunts, "All Bar One" on Lothian Road or George Street if you want a big wine bar full of suits, "Birk'n'Hare" if you want a seedy stripper pub plus what's already been listed..
For a good all-round pub crawl, how about...
Start at "The Hogs Head" on bread street, pop in for a couple of shorts at the "Point Hotel" next door, move on to the Grass Market and hit every pub there, then on to the "Three Sisters" for a few (should be busy by that point, so maybe stay there for a few), then up then up to the Royal Mile and have one in each of the following: "The Ensign Ewart", "The Jolly Judge" and "Deacon Brodies" then back down to Victoria Street for a quick one in "Finnegan's Wake" Irish bar, and finish the night off in either "Espionage" night club or "The Liquid Room"
That should do it
