My in-laws were there very recently. They came back on Monday this week. This is what they said about Maderia:
Alcohol is very very cheap
The Temperature is bloody warm and it is always sunny
There is not a great amount to do apart from Drink (that's no bad thing )
The Airport was a nightmare to land in (you approach the run way through mountains)
The locals drive like nutters (as there do everywhere)
Apart from that they had a nice time. They did not bring back any souvenirs (like they usually do) as they said that there are very few souvenir shops.

Two mates have just come back .. their thoughts ...
1. Seafood is great
2. Restaurants are very good and reasonably cheap.
3. It isn't too overrun by the 'beige' brigade.
4. Tenerife it ain't (which is why I'd go)
They loved it for a chilled out time.
