Question

Let's imagine you run a webstore (as I do) and you spot an ordering pattern that makes you suspect that someone (or someones - plural) is trying to carry out credit card fraud.

As a result, you email the prospective customers requesting proof of address and credit card (i.e. the credit card statement) to be faxed before goods will be shipped.

You then notice that an order from a previous day matches the pattern and has been delivered.

Until such time as a chargeback occurs (which could be weeks) what can be done to investigate the (potentially) thieving *******? Info held is name/address/phone/email submitted during ordering, NOT the credit card details (3rd party processing organisation), name used when signed for.

I'd get on to the 3rd party you use for processing. (they'll have a problems/technical number??) tell them and get them to have a chat with the persons creditcard company/bank. tell them you expect a possible fraud and if they can phone up and make sure the person in question is who they say they are.. the bank may or may not appreciate it , but it is worth it. may save them, possibly yourself and the person in question alot of money. one of you will lose out.

If it is fraud you may save the person a serious loss.. especially if its from a gold card/platinum card where 10's thousands can be transfered without any questions asked.

You should be covered by fraud with your 3rd party. but if not no doubt your business insurance at the end of the day? (may be wrong as each 3rd party seems to be different)
