Question

What is the procedure for building over manhole covers?

I would assume that it is not liked by the building regs. - what would be involved in moving them, cost and such like - anyone any experience??

Thanks in Anticpation

Pete

ps. The covers are NOT gold - and it wouldnt help if they were - before any smart comments fly in!!

Thumbs up

Leave it there and make a feature of it in your new room. Visitors could look down and watch the turds passing by.

Sounds like you are thinking about an extention.
It wont be cheap to move it.... It realy depends on what type of construction and flooring you use. I have layed expensive wooden floors and Marble. Just made a hatch type panel to gain access. If its done well you will find it hard to tell

Good luck with the muppets!!

Luke thanks mate - it will be in a bedroom or possibly the new en-suite (thinking of moving to a smaller house see, while the prices are silly!)

Manhole covers are best left OUTSIDE if you can mate. I came home twice in a week last year to find my back door area/back garden inches deep in turds, paper, johnnys, etc!! And, no, not all mine, I've no need of the toggies as I'm now officially a jaffa.
Definitely NOT nice.

Pete,

If you are building an extension and the manhole is in the way, you can move it without too much problem, provided it does not affect the drainage from any neighbouring property. Had the same thing at my house in Hemel.

Some Water authorities/councils require the existing drainage pipe to be exposed and cast in a specified thickness of concrete beyond the next joint ( Thames Water do I think). It all depends who "owns" the pipe.

In some instances you can block the cover and build over it and the pipes, but, it becomes your property from then on. Bursts and susidence become your worst nightmare!!

Usual caviats apply as far as the cost is concered - depends on depth, distance moved etc. A clever builder will incorporate the excavation in with the dig for the footing so as to minimise cost.

One thing to consider - don't move it to a point just outside the extension otherwise the cover will end up as part of your patio!!

Your average brick manhole would probably cost no more than a couple of hundred to build, so count on 3 to 4 hundred if it's part of a larger job.

This is one of those "how long is a piece of string questions"
which cant possibly answered without a proper survey,

but consider that the deeper the sewer the more expensive to move
there is also a specific distance between manhole for effective rodding also any change of this distance can effect your neighbours drainage
sometimes if it is not in the middle of a drain run or serves say a sink waste a small rodding eye about the size of a closed fist across will suffice.
Your local building inspector should be able to give you good advice for free.

Pete,

I have done both (Moving and Covering) manholes. What you need to consider is what it is there for, namely access to drains incase of a problem. So the one I covered I used a wooden floor and left an access panel which could fairly easily be lifted.

Digging out and building a new one takes a bit of time but the cost is faily low as all that is required is a few engineering bricks, a cover and a bit of split pipe.

Or just pay someone as phd suggests. All the best with your project. Toplift.

Thanks all - except for Diablo (but what would you expect from someone who was born in 1967, he is just a 'by product' of his dad getting a bit too excited when England won the world cup??!!)

Should we have a vote to re-name him Diabollox as he talks it!!

Protect me Michelle - you are in his club - get him chucked out!!

Diablo and Shaun have started the Moderators-Hate-pslewis Club!

I am looking to moving and the house we like needs extending and there are manhole covers in the way see? just thought I would ask!

Cheers all

Pete

I've got half a dozen in my back yard (don't ask - cr@p planning if you ask me ) [& no pun either!] & I'm slowly covering them in either plant pots, paving slabs, gravel or grass.

I know when the pub next door, or the village sewers, have a problem with their drains as what I put into my bog on the 1st floor just stays there, smiling at me

I would just love to "show" the guy who planned[sic] the plumbing in my house the bloody b@lls-up he's made of it...

"Diablo and Shaun have started the Moderators-Hate-pslewis Club!"

Could neither confirm or deny this, however it only took the other moderators a couple of seconds to decide to join the club!

Pete,
basically you can get a manhole cover with a seal on it specifically for putting in-doors, we've got one in this house, the only thing is you need to have access to it, oh, and it stinks the house out when you do go in it!
