Does anyone read & write Japanese?
#1
While I'm stuck at home, I thought I'd give myself a challenge, and learn a new language. Ok so I did pick a really difficult language and completely new alphabet, but I'm going to give it a go as I have read up on some of the history of Japan and I really like it.
I have a linguaphone type course to do, but this only shows you how to spell the words in the roman alphabet. I have a Engliah-Japanese dictionary but this does not show you how to pronounce, or what the characters are in roman script! ARRRRGH!
What I would really like is a penpal to help me along the way, and to get to know too!
Anyone able to help, or know someone who may be able to, please can you email me (email in profile) or Reply here.
Many thanks!

My ex housemate, with 7 years at Cambridge (BSc/Phd) and a jolly smart chap took to studying this language, He (and my sister - his g/f) gave up after 2 years, cos it was too tough! It is possibly THE most non-intuitive language for a UK person to learn. French is a walk in the park in comparison. Learn Spanish - easy - and you then get to chat up beautiful med girlies

Sorry Chopper, am not a lesbian. Me is a girlie, a beautiful one at that (in my parents eyes anyway )...
Can learn Spanish too if I want, have a linguaphone course at my disposal, but want to try something new.

Ah, my mistake - apologies! Regardless of your sex, I still maintain that this is a very difficult langauge to learn - if you have ever visited Tokyo, I'm sure you already know that even the tourist info people don't speak English (for a reason apparently)
They have some cracking sumo matches at the right time of year mind you!
Good luck with your choice of learning - if you do pursue Japanese, it would certainly be very cool to learn.

but a little far so difficult isn't it
Well, at least some us can try to answer sensibly, even if in the negative, or in this case, a clumsy pick up line

Hehehe!
Look people, I've bought the stuff, I'm learning the language, please just accept this! Yes it's difficult but that's what has drawn me towards learning it!

If you ever get a sensible answer. Please post here where, cos I've been thinking of learning Japanese for a few years now but never known where to start.

Richard, I've got two books, 5 tapes, and another book on order. I will give the speaking and listening part of it a try and get back to you in a week or so. If these books work for me then they'll work for you too, I'm sure.

You can learn basic Japanese (spoken) not EASILY but ok. A friend of mine did it in a year, and he's male. So it should be easier for you LOL
The kanjis are ****in impossible to learn! 1800 kanjis is high school level, but most educated people know 3000. And sometimes have to look one up when reading the newspaper!
BTW, if you're a good looking girl and need a challenge, drop me a mail

I did go through this some years back.
I'd suggest that you learn spoken and romaji written japanese first, alongside learning the hiragana and katakana alphabets.
Then, once you can converse fluently and read those move onto learning Kanji.
