Default Made off with fuel (Accidentally)

I thought this was interesting, just received a penalty notice in the post for not paying for £100 worth of diesel from an Esso petrol station, checked bank statement and sure enough no payment was made, It was a station i have never used before and i always use pay at the pump but obviously i did not push the right button and just filled up and went on my way.
Totally my fault and not paying attention, The penalty notice also included a £30 admin fee so £130 in total which if paid within 14 days would be the end of the matter.
Is this unusual? technically it is a criminal offence (Bilking) so a little surprised at just an issue of a penalty notice or is it not worth Police time?

This must be why if you pay at Pump on continent they hold on to a large deposit for couple weeks , well they did with me anyway.

Pay at pumps in Ireland , wont allow fuel dispense until the card has been checked and verified... odd.

Good call,
I know when I use pay at pump it wont dispense unless card is authorised, and some station some cards dont work, so Ive had to pay in kiosk,
So I know you cant just get fuel via pay at pump without a card that has been checked.

How did you manage that?
The pumps won't dispense fuel until the card has been authorised. At least the ones at Asda where I fill up wont.

I would definitely be looking to appeal in your position.

Sometimes it happens if you don’t have the money in the account, I think it pre authorises for £1 and then let’s you fill up to £100 regardless if you have that much in your account.

I think they got wise to people doing that, Asda pre authorise £100 now.

Thing is, that doesn’t even fully fill the tank anymore.
