Default How do I find out my cars original plate

Hi guys, my xfr has a private plate on it which I will probably end up selling as it has no meaning to me, how do I find out the cars original reg number if I did sell it?
there is nothing in the service history or on the log book.

Thanks

I'm not sure if the original plate stays with the car or not if a private plate is fitted, why im saying this is coz i put a private plate on my Golf after having it a few yrs, then took it off and sold the plate as was planning to trade the Golf in, anyway when they sent me the reg thru to replace the private plate it was the same reg the car was first registered with, so dunno if it was luck or not.

Just checked mot history and there is nothing on there. Somebody told me that the original reg would now be obsolete and that dvla would send me a new one if needed, doesn't quite sound right to me.

When you take the private reg off it goes back onto the original plate. Simple as that.

Generally DVLA hold the registration on their system. I presume as long as the car is on the road being motd and taxed. Our original registration was what came from the DVLA after 7 years.

so I won't find that out until I take this one off then? Wasn't sure if I needed it to apply for it.

I can't remember applying for one when i removed the private plate, they sent me thru paperwork with details of replacement reg which like i said was the original one it was first registered with.

It would also depend on whether the private plate was used at "first registration" or applied later.
If used at first registration they will just apply an available "year appropriate" plate, if private plate transferred/removed.

Ive just done the old mans plates about 3 months ago, retain a plate on line gov web page, does it automatically.
You get a retention cert and a new log book with the cars original plates 7 days later.
