I currently have Pirelli Sottozeros fitted and very happy with their performance. Over the last 20 years I've also run Bridgestones, Michelin and Good Years. The Michelins are probably the only ones I would never buy again, but the Pirellis have been by far the best I've had and the ones I keep going back too.
Most of my driving is in normal winter conditions, around 5-10 deg C Temperature (Big lake creates a micro-climate here around 5 degrees warmer than the surrounding areas) and pretty similar to what I'd get back in the North of England - Autumn/Early winter lots of wet greasy roads, heavy fog and morning frosts, later Winter colder drier conditions and early spring warmer and very wet. We also get Chinook winds that can give a couple of bizarre warmer days around 18-25 degrees.
I do regular day trips into the Alps for skiing in the Winter and preferably when its snowing (POWDER!) rather than Blue-Bird days - when others stop to fit chains, I've always just cruised on past with no issues - so far I've never once had to fit chains which is pretty amazing really given some of the conditions I've been driving in! I've hear the comment a lot that AWD doesn't help when braking on snow, but from my experience, sensible speeds downhill and using engine braking, I still have as much control as the 2WD cars with chains fitted! (For clarity, I always have chains in the boot, I've just never felt any need to fit them!)

As if the weather Gods read my post yesterday, woke up this morning to a surprise blizzard
Its even more ironic as I packed all my ski gear in the car last night to bring to the new house this morning!
Don't think I've ever seen so much snow in December in the 20 years I've lived here! The roads were completely untreated this morning and pretty much nothing had been ploughed either, which is unusual for Germany, I must not have been the only one surprised this morning!
Was a fun drive today and a timely reminder that Winter tyres also have a limit
Still plenty of idiots around who haven't fitted their Winter tyres though, or simply can't drive in snow! Thankfully I was out early enough to avoid the chaos!

...or maybe it's you with your new German passport that is starting to see errors where they don't exist?
