We wanted Rex rabbits due to their amazing velvet coats and wanted either sisters or a male & female from the same breeder to minimise fighting.
We got them at 8wks old and had the male booked in at 5 months to be castrated.
Unexpectedly several weeks later we had 5 babies. Fine bought another cage, seperated them and let lilly (the girl) look after them.
7wks later the babies are doing brilliant and I notice what looks like a dead mouse in a sack in the garden. Further checking theres 3 dead babies in the garden which turns out to be a second pregnancy..
It's sad they are dead but theres some relief until....
3wks later my wife rings to say she's given birth to 7 more rabbits!!!
I'm thinking jesus christ how! Well, our male Peter was kept away from Lilly for 6wks while the castration took effect but we must have missed the boat by a day or so.
Secondly. The moment a rabbit gives birth she can get pregnant 10minutes later. To make things worse they have 2 wombs and unlike humans that ovulate other the month the female rabbit ovulates the moment the male jumps on guaranteeing a successful mating session.
We now have 17 baby rabbits.
Fortunately they all seem to be doing amazingly and eating absolutely everything.
