Endoscopy
Has anyone had an endoscopy, and had it affect their sense of taste or heighten their sense of smell afterwards?
I had the procedure carried out on Friday to have 5 biopsies taken from my stomach. No general anaestheic or sedatives involved, just some numbing liquid stuff sprayed into my throat, and the rest came down to mind over matter. The unusual senses started immediately afterwards where I could smell food in the hospital and my wife couldn't, but we put it down to me craving food having been prohibited from eating anything in the preceeding 11 hours.
Today, food doesn't taste quite right, hard to describe, but everything seems quite sharp or bitter - liquids taste fine when I drink them. Things smell much stronger than they did previously too - I was able to smell an unlit scented candle in our lounge so strongly I've had to remove it to the garage, it hasn't been lit since last Christmas. I had to leave a coffee shop that my family and I visit most weekends, as I couldn't stand the smell of freshly ground coffee. My wife tells me it was no different to any other week. Filling the car with diesel this morning, the smell almost made me sick, I normally quite like the waft of vapor you get, just as you start to fill up.
Neither of these are recorded as after effects in the patient care document I was given, searches on google returns mainly horror stories from people about their experience of the procedure itself. Now that I think about it some of the spray stuff or it's vapour did 'go up my nose' which made my eyes water a bit, wonder if that might be a factor?
Just wondering if anyone has found the same thing or has an explanation?

I had it done with just the spray and I wretched like a "bitch"...
So much so my eyeballs actually burst blood vessels and went red.
I think they do give you tea/toast afterwards which may be the smell of food you mentioned in the hospital.
As for the other effects you mention , no I don't recall any thing like that to be honest,

No, I had no after effects, was pretty straight forward, I did opt for the Valium though but I have a high tolerance to drugs, so it basically just calmed me slightly.
Wouldn't worry if I had to do it again.
Sounds like you have gained super human smelling .. not sure Marvel will be on the phone, but it might come in useful

Hi TT, All seems very odd I had an endo about a year ago. Lot easier than I imagined it would be. Thought I would gag but quick spray, closed my eyes, thought of England and job done. But certainly not a hint of the after effects you describe. Have you asked your GP or hospital about it?
Must be somethings to do with the spray surely and hopefully the side effects will diminish. Hope it's all resolved soon. atb David

48 hours on and everything seems back to normal - will mention it at the follow up appointment and see if there are any explanations, can smell dinner cooking right now, and it smells just like a sunday roast should! Hope it tastes just as good as it smells!
Thanks for the comments.

After a few months I was notified by the main hospital that I would be receiving an endoscopy appointment, because my Barium meal scan shows me all clear. Although it would have been from the mouth to the gut procedure, I would have declined. I was too freaked out with what happened to that lady, although I'm aware that such accidents are very rare. My appointment never came in, anyway- thank God.
TT, good news on your smooth stint. Best wishes for your good health. 😊

Go. Don't worry about it. Say if I had to go, I would have gone; even when I would have been freaking out. I don't think the consultant thought I needed to have it, and therefore, they struck me off the list and never sent me a letter for it.
The accident I talk about was a freak accident. We live in a very small village, seem to know one another, and impact one another's life. Therefore, this mishap cast a shadow on all of us. Fact is that every day, thousands of endoscopies take place on daily basis in Britain, and hardly anyone experiences what that lady did. It was awfully shocking because our neighbour lady, who left a ten year-old child and a husband around her own age behind, didn't really have any life threatening illness. She generally was in good health. Just a check-up caused her the death. It's not a usual mishap at all, so you should go for it.

Dont worry about it Shaun, it is a bit unpleasant and it is a weird thing, I did say to the consultant afterwards that swallowing a camera and 4ft of fibre optic cable is not the weirest thing I have ever done on a friday afternoon - but the procedure itself only takes 5 - 10 minutes. It made me gag a couple of times on the way in and once on the way out, and that is really the most unpleasant part - I clearly have no future as a sword swallower or gay pornstar but if I got a call today to say it had to be redone tomorrow, i wouldn't give it a second thought.
Despite what I read on the internet, the biopsy is painless - had I not heard the consultant saying open and close to the theatre nurse when the samples were being taken I would have had no indication they were being taken, there was no sensation of being able to feel anything other than the scope move once or twice which feels weird, but is neither painful or uncomfortable - I opted to go without sedation, in the belief I would be more able to be compliant with their instructions if I had total control over myself, if the discomfort was intolerable I could withdraw my consent, or request to be sedated before continuing.
I had the pizza I had been longing for all day around 3 hours after the procedure and took the family to the North Coast the following day - so no after-effects beyond what I mentioned in the thread, and cant be sure they were related at all. The consultant did joke that if I was having sedation, going to the bar to watch the Liverpool v Chelsea game that evening probably wouldn't be a wise decision, so infer you may feel a bit washed out from the effect of the drug for some time afterwards.
Drop me a PM if you have any questions at all, happy to try to alleveiate any concerns you may have, dont read too much on the internet - most of the folks who seem to post about it negatively seem to have other complex medical needs and give the impression they are a bit frightened of everyday life in general.

It's the one up the **** that you need to be worried about. I had this last year, due to ongoing complications after a very long (9 month) bout of food poisoning 10 years ago.
The most unpleasant experience I've ever come across. You feel the camera moving around your intestines, and there are some very tight corners in there, which feel f**king awful. Camera feels like a f**king scaffold pole.
On powerful laxatives for 2 days prior to clear yourself out, and all you can eat is jelly babies and alike.
Hope I never have to have another one of them.
Saying that though, a lad I used to work with had to have a camera shoved down his Japs eye. Even with it numbed, he was screaming in agony. He didn't take anyone with him, so couldn't be sedated.
He said it was like someone trying to shove a Bic Biro down there.

You must be a thespian with that over dramatisation. Ive had three rear ended version, not the nicest thing but not as bad as that. I agree though that the 'other version' brings a sudden chill.

Endoscopy is an invasive procedure. It causes psychological discomfort before you have it done and sometimes, even physical discomfort during the procedure. It detects a disease or rules it out, so can't really complain. I'm sure one only gets called for it, if it's really necessary.
I actually once had a camera down my throat; about ten years ago. I absolutely hated the procedure. It helped ruling out any disease in my throat, so I'm ok with that.

No, sorry stilover, thats not my sort of thing and its not really the sort of topic to lower the tone in.
Turbohot, I agree about the psychological implication, it can be more discomforting not knowing. By having it done you get to know whether all is well or what it is you need to deal with.

Why is it funny? It's predictable, dim-witted and something you would only usually find teenagers feeling vaguely proud of saying as they gain a few laughs from their mates.
edit....I have just clocked the above avatar which has explained a lot. I'll leave you boys to it. Enjoy sniggering over bums and pictures of bouncy *****.

I'll have you know, I've been praised by many a member on here for my judicious choice of avatar.
