Don't drink the green water, always tip the Gondolieri, and stay away from strange-looking guys with German accents

Make sure you've got plenty of cash before you climb aboard a gondola

Go and see the square and then take the flying cat over to Istria.

Do not accept any offers of a free water taxi ride to Murano. You will get ushered into one of the glass factories where you will be put under pressure to buy horribly expensive and vulgar glass, then treated like dog **** once they realise you are not going to buy.

Apart from that, I loved Venice, not as expensive as I thought, nor as smelly (and I was there in a real heat wave in August). We actually stayed in an olde world hotel right on the Grand Canal by the big bridge (can't remember its name!), wasn't expensive and very good.

Don't have a coffee in St Mark's square!

Do walk around a lot, there's lots to see off the beaten track

Do a gondola ride, just accept it will be expensive (or share a bigger one with some other people to spread the cost).

And for the other replies ,

Almost booked that ex glass factory place hotel on Murano itself.

I'm going there on Thursday for a day/night, before travelling onward on a cruise.

You could perhaps meet up with dpb and co. for a drink, if appealing to both sides? Let's see how you find each other in reality.
