get a very fine craft saw, cut it in half, hollow out the inside and fill it with either gripfill or molten lead. Gripfill is not heavy, but the conker will never break. Lead is v.v. heavy so you might raise suspicions.

The two methods you mentioned harden the conker, I used to sware by it as a lad and i always did pretty well.
Suck it and see, you can always come back with the lead varaiant if ya lose !! err oh sorry you young friend loses !!

Phil if you in North London get your conkers from Broomfield Park. Seems to be extra resiliant from what I remember.
Baking them did make them harder but don't overdo it or they can go brittle.

I am a wee bit of a Conker speacialist.
I have tried many things. Firstly, Vinegar wrecks the nut....do not even think about it!
The oven is a dangerous game, there is a fine line between strong rubbery nut and hard brittle nut.
The best method, tried and proven, is to submerge the nut in a flour, sea salt, and milk mixture for about a fortnight. then dry out on the window sill for a week. You are then the proud owner of a wrecking ball!
cheers
Bob.
