video has died, is it worth getting a tivo?

Thing is, it's twice the price and doesn't do as much!
The main benefit I suppose would be the ability to record stuff and lend/swap with other people, but you can always save to VCR from the TIVO, albeit at a lower quality...

My video recorder has died a death (just beyond warranty finish, im sure they are built that way grrrrrrrr) and seeing as we never watch any video in the lounge any more (dvds only) I was wondering if anyone on here owns a tivo and what they think of it etc?
We still have a tv / video combi unit upstairs (well two actually) so can still record/watch vid up there when we need to.
any thoughts?

No doubt about it, get one .
I've had mine for over a year, and recently added a 120 Gb second disc. Even for a technical incompetant like me, it wasn't a problem following instructions from http://www.tivocommunity.com. This has given me 56 hours at Best Quality, and that's barely distiguishable from the live feed.
I don't think I could ever go back to relying on tape, as the ability to start watching something you're recording before it's finished saves a lot of frustration.
The Live Buffer, Season Passes, Wishlists and Suggestions mean that I very rarely miss anything I'd like to see. I'm recording stuff in the middle of the night that I wouldn't bother with due to nightly time changes if I was setting a video, but I just pick the name, and let TiVo worry about when (this is very handy when things clash, but you can record a repeat). My only problems are that not everything starts on time, the guide data can be flaky or non-exitant (no Motors TV data). There's also the shadow over the "Must See.." event last week, but you'll find answers to any questions on the TiVo Community, just head to the UK section.
Martin (currently watching Blue Thunder from the Live Buffer while recording First Wave on a Season Pass).

same thing, but no itv recording (whereas tivo can do satellite as well), tho the sky one allows you to record another sky channel.
Theres a comparison review in some cinema mag this month and the tivo beat the sky alternative.
Also i begrudge paying sky more money than i currently do as they can't even provide there proper service correctly when it rains! and also fobbed me off when the interactive services started playing up till the digibox was out of warranty and now want to charge me to fix it lol

I've just bought one last week. It's fantastic!
They can be bought at www.linkonline.co.uk for £199, or retail in shops if you want at ~ £229. Add the lifetime subscription to the guide data (£200) or pay for it at £10 a month and you have a £400 gizmo.
Quite a lot when compared with the cost of a replacement video, but loads better.
You'll never miss another episode of anything, and always have a bank of programmes matched to your viewing tastes ready to watch. You can pause and time-shift live TV, etc. etc. etc.
As mentioned above, there is also a huge backing from a user community on the tivo forums. They are all really helpful.
HTH,
Alex

Why on earth does Sky+ rule?
Tivo does all that Sky does, plus loads more, and works out cheaper?
You'll find loads of Sky subscribers on the Tivo forums that will recommend it - it's not just terrestrial or cable viewers.

or

I've had one for 18 months now and it is well-worth doing.
I've also upgraded mine to 2 x 120Gb disks (84 hours BEST quality).
Cheapest place in the UK apparently is Link Online at £199.50 + P&P
If you are a "tinkerer" (and I think you are ) - there is loads of stuff available like connecting it to a broadband connection and remote controlling it using the web...
See http://www.9thtee.com/tivoupgrades.htm
Get one - you won't regret it !
Thanks
Gavin

Sure,
I don't have 5.1, I do put the sound into my Naim stereo which gives excellent quality, but not Surround, obviously.
For me the extra functionality on the Tivo is far more important that the 5.1, and there are ways around that as mentioned above if you really want it.

I have not got a personal opinion on the different systems just that my Brother has got both the Sky plus and Tivo boxes and he prefers the Tivo.
I did see the Tivo advertised as coming free with a certain 28 or 32" tv at IIRC Powerhouse.
