Question

P1 Steve,

A fine set of piccies

Are these taken using centre-weighted metering and aperture / shutter priority or "idiot mode" as I've tried all sorts of combinations with my EOS 5 / 430EZ flash and don't seem to be able to get a decent exposure - either burnt out foreground or underexposed. Don't want to take flashmeter with me and start working manually

Do you alter the exp. compensation on the flash down by anything so you don't get burnt out highlights?

I'm thinking of just taking my digi S40 compact to Autosport - at least you can check and dump the picture there and then

TIA

If you push the right buttons, you can usually get a nice zoom.

Apple, if you use the fastest lense youve got and use your EOS 5 on apature priority or shutter priority you realy shouldnt be able to go wrong with a Canon 430ez.
I use an Eos 1n and a 540ez with great results.
Try and buy the Hove users guide for Canon speedlites, it carries on from where the manual finishes.
Also have a look atwww.camera.canon.com.mythis site has some good tests and guides on how to use various pieces of kit(its a bit slow at times though) but this site helped me through me City and Guilds course.

Attu,

thanks for the info

I've generally used a tamron 28-105 f/2.8 which should cover most things but never seemed to get exposures back I was happy with.

My main problem is wanting to get natural skin tones rather than contrasty / burnt out skin & black background

Apple, what you need to do is to use some fill-flash so that you balance the foreground and the ambient light in the background.

Try dialling in some flash compensation on your gun. I generally find that -0.7 (or -2/3) works well but you should do some tests to see what works for you. You might also want to try using a diffuser (Stofen or Lumiquest) to reduce the harshness of the flash. Don't use both techniques at the same time for obvious reasons !

Agree with the above - I generally set the flash to 1 to 1 1/2 stops under to get a balance of fill in and ambient light. The lighting at shows is hard to get accurate as there is normally so much light around anyway. Good luck !
