dipped beam fault
I have an '01bug WRX, with Morette headlamps from new.
the problem is that I have just changed my HID kit to a 50W set up (no posts about how good or bad HID's are plz).
The off side dipped beam stopped working this morning.
The blue main beam dashboard light is now glowing at about half brightness on dipped beam; and on full beam the blue light goes out completely.
I am guessing that its an earth fault, can anyone possibly be more specific for me - have any other ideas?
thanks...

I will keep myself updated then
found badly corroded terminations to the cables on both of the 25A relays tucked up under the top lip of the headlamp pod.
One cable broke off when I moved it . Reterminated the cables but still no joy as yet.
I also connected the HID supply direct to the Earth points on each inner wing.
Going to get two new relays and see what that does. The circuit in itself isnt hard to work out but the time and daylight to do it is...
I think I will also replace the micro relays in the fuse box.

Due to the weather I didnt get a chance to replace the relays; however I swapped out the HID ballast with another one and had success.
I guess that the failing of the supply to the ballast caused by the corroded termination has damaged the ballast.
I did notice that the connections in general were not in a very good state, age and engine cleaner probably taken its toll.
I gave the connections a spray with a WD40 type lube, hopefully that will halt any further issues 'till I can change all the cable terminations.

First off, with cable terminations: DO use terminals without the plastic collars, crimp, then solder. Supply each with a soft plastic cover, aka a "boot".
Here are some, and covers: http://www.vehicle-wiring-products.e...ninsblades.php
Secondly, bad connection to the ballast is highly unlikley to damage the ballast. I'm afraid you may have bought a "Far Eastern special" HID kit.
Thirdly, if relay terminals, or the terminals affixed to them are rusty, you MAY also have water inside them.
A good idea is to run a thin bead of 5 minute epoxy (Araldite etc) around the join between relay base and cover, before fittin.
And keep them facing DOWNwards and as far away from splash as possible

thanks for the tips....
having been a sparky for 25yrs+ I have taken to liberal use of self amalgamating tape
the doctor didnt show any concern when I said this ...
The cheap ballast is certainly an option; I thought that the constant spiking of the poor supply to it may have caused the damage, I dont know what else they put in circuit.
PS. the spray I used was a conformal coating... I just didnt want to confuse anyone.

I haven't; just due to other commitments, and weather
the set up seems to be working OK now as well, as a half way measure I did get rid of the relay mountings, just another set of terminations to corrode in my opinion.
