Default Classic HID Projector project

Always fancied having a go at this, after seeing some of the efforts on here. Mostly the main person to do it over here, and with a guide.

Although the guide didn't really apply, as I used a projector headlight kit made for lights with H4 bulbs. So there was no cutting, and everything is totally reversable.

Its still a work in progress, shouldn't be really, as it only took less than an hour to get the projectors in. Its being done with a spare set of crystals I have, which are really the only classic headlights you could do it with.
Basically all I have left to do is wire them up, and fit them to the car.

Ok, here is the kit I bought on a whim:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...=STRK:MEWNX:IT

I have to buy the ballasts separately, something I overlooked when I made my last minute bid. Also the colour arrangement is not ideal for me, is 8000k, and the lighting around the projector is like a blue angel eye, so probably won't use that.

So first step was to remove the glass:

I also removed the bezel part that can be painted black,:

here is the projector going in:

This is the clever part, or so I thought, the projector is held in place with H4 style connecting ring, so is very secure:

I had to take out the crystal deflector things, they just had one screw holding them in:

SO that was it basically:

Glass will go on later, but actually fitting/wiring, well that could take a while. So no pics of the light output yet.

Glass on:

Plenty of wiring, thats without the ballasts

Couple of questions for the lighting experts.

This frosted area on the top of the projector:

Is that the cut-off? I've heard that mentioned before, and first time round I had the both pointing the wrong way looked like they would blind oncoming traffic. So I had to start the whole thing again. I've looked and looked, but the instructions don't mention the projectors being sided.

Also, what fitment is this bulb:

I'd want to replace if the are too blue, the kit mentions its H4, but I always thought H4 HID bulbs were just the HID version of regular H4's.

All comments welcome.

I take it they are UK Spec Projectors with the correct cut off right?

I'll be interested to see the light output, and how the bulb copes with the cutoff needed for dips.

Ah darms, the lighting pro I was talking about.

Erm, I don't know. They are Hong Kong specials. I was hoping you could tell me from the frosted area. There is a pic on the box, of them in a lhd car, with the cut off the opposite way. Am I being stupid in assuming you can swap them over to accomodate?

Well I know no one likes a bi bulb, because its not brilliant at anything. But full beam I don't care about because I have PIAA 80XT driving lamps. I only use them about 10 percent of the time, so I'd rather see for the other 90.

Whiles I've got two of the lighting guru's on board, anyone know what that bulb fitment is?

the bulb supplied are called D2S, which are apparently OE fitment on the cars below, although I doubt most of them use just the one bulb:

ive had these Bi-Xenon's fitted to my car for about 2 years now. but mine didnt pass the last mot with them as the adjuster broke in the headlight so i cant adjust the beam i found it very hard to get the beam patter right as there a bit heavy for the ring clips that come with them. also one of the blasts has failed now and only works on full beam but when they were 100% they did look good few pics.

You could bond them in as well as use the thread. That should see them okay shouldn't it?

Tee- It only failed dues to the lack of adjustment? Any other pic's of the beam pattern they give out?

Is that the cut-off? I've heard that mentioned before, and first time round I had the both pointing the wrong way looked like they would blind oncoming traffic. So I had to start the whole thing again. I've looked and looked, but the instructions don't mention the projectors being sided.
I've had some BMW projectors apart a number of times for cleaning and repairing (adjusters break and the lenses get dusty impairing light output). And the metal strip behind the lens is the cut-off. The lens actually reverses the projected light, so the beam cut-off strip is fitted upside down - with the strip blocking light at bottom, not the top where you would expect.

I'll try to grab a picture, but the cars are covered in a in snow so I doubt the pics will come out or be of any use.

Also make sure the cut-off has a "kick up" suited for a right hand drive car, there will be a "step" along the egde of the same metal strip with allows more light to the curbside, If its dead straight, then there is no kickup (which would make them a bit pants in output as you won't see much on the nearside compared to normal light with a "kick-up" ). I'll have to check which side the kick up notch is supposed to be, as again I think its mirrored (top is bottim, left is right etc...confusing LOL ).

Good luck

My Jaguar Bi-Xenon Projectors has a static cut off unlike some of the BM/Mini projectors.

This is what mine are like

And the above shows the lens effect: the cutoff is placed at the bottom, but will be at the TOP of the light output.

I was on that thread, but tnever saw any pics of the headlights themselves.
I had a feeling that this is the kit that bob wanted to do. I think his concerns were it not being user freindly, but I thought it was pretty easy.
I was expecting to have to cut the the reflectors like you did, but was pleasently surprised.

Small update.
Finally got some ballasts. They were delivered pretty much next day, so I could have done it ages ago:

Got to hide all this lot some where in the engine bay:

Just went out to test the ballast, and it all worked, plug and play. The only wires you need to crimp/solder/join are the sidelights, which are the angel eye part, which I wont be using.

So run us through what you have done again: H4 kit with a retrofit HID?

I tried to contact the company selling the lights the OP mentioned, they first agreed to send me a set of instructions, but they never did, and they NOW reckon they no longer sell the lights.

Yeah thats it.

But I never got any ballasts with the kit, only just got them now.

I am the OP, and I see that link doesn't work anymore, neither can I find the firm.
It was a generic chinese made kit, there are loads more on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PROJECTOR-LENS...item3a63c96c2f

So...........now they are up and running, can you tell us firstly if they use the H4 moving filament bulb? Or a straight D2S type?

Secondly, can you stand the car about 15-20 feet from a wall, select dips and photograph the beam pattern on the wall? Then do main beams?

Thanks.

I haven't sorted them yet, just tested the ballasts work when I got in.
Should be completing this weekend, where I'll have some beam pattern shots. But there is already a picture of the bulb, its a straight D2S bulb.
