Red: permanent live.
Orange: Switched live, ie from ign or acc.
White: lighting.
Black: Earth.

Where have you put the temperature sender for the gauge, and is it wired correctly? Is IT'S plug firmly in place, not the one on the back of the gauge, the one in the engine bay?
Is the sender properly earthed? Try a wire fastened to battery earth, touched firmly to the sender body.

But is colour coding enough to stop a three pin plug going into a three pin socket ?

I'd imagine it's an earthing issue, if the harness doesn't earth the sensor anyway.....

Make sure your battery keeps it's charge: Defis won't work below 9V, trust me

Glad it's sorted.

TBH, I can't remember the last time I saw a post about problems with Defis that wasn't down to installation probs.
They are class.
