Default Spotlight wiring....

Not a Subaru folks, but i have a runaround car with a wiring problem. Six months ago I fitted a set of spotlights to the car with 100w bulbs wired through a 5 pin relay to light up on main beam only. The lights worked perfectly since until yesterday when they started f4rting about

The problem is that the spotlights come on ok with the main beam but then they will not extinguish when i dip the headlights. The only way i can get the spotlights to go out is to turn the lights off completely

Any ideas on what would be causing this? Maybe a faulty relay?....but im thinking not as it clicks ok and turns the spotlights on??

Cheers folks

It does sounds like a faulty relay or you may have been using a inadequate one. What relay is it?

Not sure of the make matey, its just a normal black 5 pin type that you would get in a cara accessory shop or that. In what way could it be inadequate? I thought a relay like that was a standard part and there wouldnt be much to it??

You may find that 100w is more than it is rated for and its possibly heating up and just sticking on.

I had that with a relay under the bonnet that got wet from spray when I drove through a big puddle. Turned the main beam off and the spot lights stayed on.

Cured it with moisture resistant relays from VWP but they're no longer listed on the website.

Try moving the relays away from anywhere vulnerable to spray.

Been thinking more. If they stay on with dip and then go off when you turn dip off then you must be getting 12V back up the main beam terminal to the relay trigger when dip is on. Could perhaps be a bad earth on one of the normal headlights, try pulling the two 3 pin terminals off and cleaning the contacts. Could be an internal fault in one of the H4 bulbs in the normal headlights. Try disconnecting one at a time and see if that solves it.

blah blah blah the contacts are not releasing in side get a bigger relay m8 or wire up one per light simplified

ceri

as gdavey said you need a bigger one lol
rule is
watts divided by voltage equalls amperage

so
120 watts divided by 12 volts is 10 amps wallah

ill get my coat
