Fluid levels in the battery too low?

I once sat on a taxi rank in my minicab days, and the taxi behind me got a call. As he started his engine, his battery EXPLODED!

Apparently cuased by too low a fluid level.

I got his run too, and it was a £13 job!

Turns out it was a faulty battery.
