Default Fuel pump problems

I have an intermittent fault with my fuel pump.

There is a 12v feed to the multiplug at the pump, which lasts a couple of seconds when the ignition is switched on, then drops. The earth has continuity to the chassis.

When plugged on, the pump doesn't work. Reasonable to assume it's the pump.

HOWEVER, when I put a 12v feed direct from a battery pack to the pump, it works.

I cleaned the terminals up, then removed the cables from the multiplug and attached them direct to the pump. No joy.

Any ideas? Maybe not enough current? What readings should I be getting? Any help resolving this would be great.

Thanks in advance.

Me too! Not quite the same symptoms, but similar problems. Should there be a constant 12v (when ign on anyway) at the plug, or does something else control when pump is needed?

Sure it must be a common request, but anyone got a wirning diagram for the fuel pump?

HELP!

I think there's a relay for the pump, but I'm not sure where it is, what it looks like and if it would cause the problem my car has.

I know, it really can't be that complicated, yet still can't work out what is going on!

Someone must know???

Bolox to it, I'm going to run an ignition live to it and see how it goes til it can be diagnosed properly.

If you hear a massive bang later, that'll be me

measure the voltage at the connector on the pump with a multi-meter. It should be 12v, if it is lower than 12v, then move the black probe on the multimeter to another good earth point. If the voltage rises back upto 12v then it is a poor (resistive earth). If the voltage stays low when you move the black probe to a good earth point then you have a resistive 12 supply- follow the wiring and check all connections.

Hopes this makes sense

Yes it does, mate. However, I have just come in from sorting the fault. Under the rear seat is a multiplug, which has been arcing. I cleaned it up, ensured the connections are tight and now it's working

Time to go and bump my for sale threads
