I've had my RB5 since new, but I've never had more than 3 weeks out of a set of bulbs.

There was a "wiring" fault when the car was delivered, so they didn't work for a couple of months. The dealer replaced the original 120w for some 100w, but these have only lasted 2 weeks.

Has anyone else had similar problems. I don't think the dealers to blame, but I'd rather look at all the possiblities before loosing the plot completely.

Ozzy

Reasons bulbs fail:

Excessive heat
Vibration
Current surging/overloading/frequent switching on&off

Bad connections

It's going to be one of these.....The dodgy wiring sounds suspect...

Yep, for once i'll side with the hill billy muppet - bad wiring sounds like the mostly likely culprit.

Cool

When my last car was blowing Scoobysport Cibie Bulbs at a stupid rate, Pete suggested it could have been the car's voltage regulator at fault. Mind you, it can't have been "vibration" as the car had his suspension and he had fitted the lights.

Moray,

Don't you mean Cibie bulbs bought at Scoobysport !
Didn't realise Pete made suspension. I know he sells Leda.
So what are you trying to say - nothing from reading your post, just whinging !
A least you can't blame Pete for the Gearbox(S), Diffs, Clutches - Couldn't be anything to do with your driving/lack of mechanical sypathy could it ??

Thanks for the info guys.

Dave, I noticed that you have the Prodrive PIAA conversion as well. How many sets of bulbs have you had ??

Cheers,

I've had the Cibie light conversion for just over two years now with the original bulbs still in. I fitted this kit myself.
I've obviously read many post on problems with both kits with blown bulbs.
Something I did when fitting my kit was to wrap lots insulating tape around the connectors as i thought at the time that as these lights were so low the water could possibly have a detrimental effect on their longevity.
Maybe this has helped, i don't know. Could be worth a try.?

Thumbs up

Ozzy
PIAA's fitted July - on both our cars (by me, so wired properly) - no bulb problems at all.

Hi

I have the PIAA lights on my car.The first pair of bulbs failed together after seven months.Recently the second set of bulbs have also failed together after 8 months use.

The filament has blown on just one of the bulbs, the others have all failed where the lead attaches to the end of the filament. The metal part of the bulb looks like it has been getting seriously hot.

I use the lights a lot often on bumpy roads and its not uncommon for them to be on for half an hour at a time. I always turn them off when I slow down so they have air flowing over them whenever they are on but they must still be getting too hot.

New piaa bulbs are 18 pounds each but the performance still far outweighs the costs as far as I'm concerned

I replaced the standard H4 filaments in my MY2000 turbo with the PIAA EWC1W set. A definite improvement over the originals but both dipped beams have failed within 24 hrs of each other after 6 months. I've mailed PIAA asking for their view on things. I'll let you know how I got on. <BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial">quote:<HR>Originally posted by ozzy:
