earthing

I think this is a touch of 'the emperor's new clothes', but if you want to read about it then look here http://forums.i-club.com/forums/show...hreadid=156303

You know, maybe in West Yorkshire we don't need it cos we are down to earth already.
Couldn't think of anything more constructive to say on the earthing issue. Its one of those things that can't do any harm but won't do what it claims either. Yanks, you gotta love 'em.

Dont know if this is any help but we have a MY99 B4 RSK I added a 7 wire earthing system to the car (Thanks to Decibels for making up the wires for me for free!!) as per Jeff Tsai's detailed fitting instructions and have to say that there is slight improvement throughout the rev range. We also noticed that the car starts quicker (a strange one but true)
If you wish I'd be happy to post pictures.

Ok... Sorry for the less than perfect quality!!!
Ok I know that to some it may make the engine bay a little messy and yes maybe i left a little too much slack in some of the wires and yes the battery terminal looks a little crowded but its my car!!
It does genuinely seem to make a difference and I know others with B4's who have tried it and have also noticed a difference...
Hope this helps!

I'll second the motion on the earthing - ignored too much. We did a new B4 recently and found that it's earthing was as bad as the earlier cars'. Results were as expected, smoother up and down the rev range, and the stereo sounded better
Matt, I have added a big line to the body earth as well - lights got a touch brighter Never ceases to amaze how bad the std set up is

This may be a nod to the earlier model cars - on the back page of the 93-96 Link ECU manual there are instructions to improve the earthing points!
It sounds like there may be a benefit in the later cars as well.
Thanks

Now I was going to mention about the stereo but I thought people would think I was winding them up!!! It does seem louder and seems to have more depth, in fact that was a major thing I noticed!
I still find it hard to believe that after all the millions Subaru must spend on R&D that this has been overlooked. I mean for the sake of £30 and an hour's work why did they not choose to have better earthing?
Whereabouts did you run the last wire to?

Matt, just be sure to clean everything well to ensure good conductivity, and then greas'er up afterwards to prevent any rust starting...
Not a huge change in much beyond what you've done already, but I got lots less shocks from my car after doing it.
Cheers.

Ecu Specialist
I have an nine point "circle", one to each corner of the inlet manifold, one to nearside strut top linked across the two earth terminals, one to the off side strut top, one to the alternator, one to the near side inner wing and finally one to the passenger footwell connected to the ecu case mounting stud.
I used a HKS kit as the basis and added cabling according to my own assessment of what was needed.
Certainly I have much less interferance and the ground planes are not jumping around any more.
If someone can point me in the right directiuon to upload pics somewhere then I will post a couple up.

Try Turbosport Uploader, just follow the instructions.
[edited to say: don't get confused about the subscription service thing, it DOES work with scoobynet]
Andrew...

In Japan it's well known that later Legacy responds very well to extra earthing which is why most secondhand ones that find their way to the Uk already have this mod. Generally smoother engine operation.

Does the earthing setup apply to subarus mainly, or would it apply to pretty much any efi vehicle?
Would the gains ( however small ) still apply to a subaru with a different ecu, eg motec, or would it be an even better idea with such an ecu fitted.
How important is cable size?, would a 6mm2 suffice, or larger ( it looks like about 16mm2 in the pics ) be better, altho very bulky it seems. Not sure what they work out at in awg/swg.
If doing the mod, is basically just bang an earth on at any available bolt hole, and link the **** out of it, or must they all run individually back to the earth source ie, the battery.

My plan is to get a nice big bit of 0AWG from the (-) terminal of the battery to a point on the chassis, and then take all the wires from there, as I should look a lot neater, and work just as well.
In theory, you need ALL the earth wires as thick as possible, to keep all the chassis ground planes at the same level.
From a physics point of view, changing the earth should improve ANY ECU, regardless of make.
Anyone tried taking an earth all the way to the back of the car?
BTW....That is a S W E E T legacy. I am so jealous.
