Default Finally got one!!!

Well folks, after what seemed like an eternity waiting on the right car, I bought one 3 weeks ago and picked it up on Tuesday there

Its easy now to understand what all the fuss is about with these cars

Was wondering where the people from the North go for their mods, quite fancy a new exhaust and have been told that a new induction kit too would be a good start to modding the car.

Anyway, now I can join in the "was it you" thread

Hows it going scoobybhoy, congratulations on getting your scoob and good luck with it.

Definetly change to a new exhaust if its still got the standard one, there are plenty to choose from out there all depending on your price range and how loud you want it. I have a Magnex 6x4 oval on mine and love the note from it and its not to intrusive on motorway journeys.

I wouldnt change to an induction kit , they seem to damage the MAF sensors on impreza's which can lead to serious engine damage. The normal induction is fine on an impreza and depending on which model you have they are sufficient for power outputs up to 300bhp+, or you could change to a good performance panel filter like a K&N or Green, I have had a Green group N panel filter in mine for over a year with no problems.

Have a look at Andy Forrest's site, it is full of very usefull info on tuning your impreza properly. Link below:

Cheers Gawley, posted a thread in General on this site and a couple of people said about the induction kit, not too sure about it myself.

Its an 03 STi by the way and I was thinking more about driveability than pure power or speed so what would you recommend yourself mate?

All depends on how much you have to spend scoobybhoy, I would definetly change the exhaust to start with, firstly to release the impreza's burble and secondly because you will get good power gains from it. I would change the back box and centre section of the exhaust although i would leave the standard downpipe on unless your going to get the ECU remapped. Alot of people do still run full decats without getting them remapped with no problems but i personally wouldnt chance it. I spoke to Olly Clarke from roger clarke motorsport about running a full decat without a remap and he said it should be ok as the cars run very rich as standard but its totally your own call.

I would then change to a performance panel filter like K&N or Green, although this isnt overly necessary but for all the price of it you may as well. I got my Green group N panel filter from TSL Motorsport, see link below:

TSL MOTORSPORT | Subaru Saab Mitsubishi | parts | repair | servicing | performance tuning | UK

After this you would really need a remap to go any further and keep it all safe. Andy Forrest does the ECUTEK remaps that changes the parameters of your standard ECU so you have all the good points of a standard ECU with some extra and safe power. You can raise boost etc with a boost controller and performance fuel pump and regulator but i think you would be better off with an ECUTEK remap as its tailored to the needs of your engine and everything will be running pefectly after it. Im planning a trip over to Andy Forrest to get my own remapped soon.

You should get good power gains from just an exhaust and panel filter, i have the same set-up on mine and its a UK classic (think they were 217bhp standard) and the last rolling road i had it on showed it running 250bhp and 261bhp when the intercooler was being sprayed with water. Good results from not alot of mods

Gawley, thank you very much mate for taking the time to write all that out

Is there anywhere in particular you would recommend for the exhaust??

Would I be ok buying one of the internet and getting it fitted or would I be better to go to a shop to get it all in one, bought and fitted, and if so where would you recommend?

Again, thanks a million for this mate, this is what messageboards like this are all about

I would recommend Performance Subaru in Coleraine if it was handy for you. Johnny up there really knows his stuff, and whilst they arent the cheapest I would at least trust them with my car which says a lot.

Think they have their own website, Performance Subaru - Ireland's leading fast road Subaru specialist , though it doesnt always show their full range of stock. Or you could give them a call, they are in the book under McKeary Motors Coleraine.

Good luck with the new car, wouldnt mind hearing the exhaust after you get it done as was thinking bout changing mine (MY05 STI with PPP), but wasnt sure .........watch this space LOL

Thanks brocks

Wouldnt mind the drive up to Coleraine at all

Will give them a ring to see what they recommend, although probably wont be doing anything to the car for a few weeks to let the good lady get onside after buying the car, might need to spoil her for a while first

No problem at all Scoobybhoy, any time.

Yeah you would be fine getting one off the internet but make sure you get a decent make of exhaust. I bought my magnex backbox through the shop on this site, you can see the link at the top of the page, but there are so many out there to choose from. I currently have the Magnex backbox and a roger clarke motorsport straight through centre section and i love the noise.

Any mechanic could fit an exhaust system so you will have no problem getting it fitted.

What type of exhaust are you looking for, would you do alot of motorway miles etc. If you do you wouldnt want something too loud or maybe you do want something quite loud . Also what is your price range for one. Let me know and i will post you up some good examples

Basically do a mixture of town and motorway driving mate, a nice deep scooby note would be what im after as opposed to a really loud exhaust.

Price range basically cos it wouldnt be for a few weeks anyway mate I dont mind waiting and saving for the right one instead of going out and getting a cheap model if you know what i mean, however, every penny is a pound too so I wouldnt want to buy the most expensive one just cos it is, a nice wee bargain at the right price would suit me

Might go and see what McKeevers in Coalisland have or would I be better to get a brand new one?

Cheers

Yeah you could try McKeeverers and see what they have, why not. You could also check in the forsale section on this site or even e-bay to see whats on offer 2nd hand.

I really rate the Magnex 6x4 oval, i love the look of it and it has a nice deep note from it thats not to raspy like some jap style ones and its not to intrusive on the motorways.

If you dont find anything 2nd hand, check out the following sites for new ones.

Scoobyworld, as far as i know their exhausts are made by Hayward & Scott who are a very reputible company, they also have sound clips of the exhausts on the site and they do deals on exhaust and panel filter packages:

Impreza Turbo 2001-2005 New Age:Impreza Turbo 2001-2005 New Age: Scoobyworld Afterburner Vortex [AFTERBURNERBB] - £279.99£249.99

APS exhaust systems are really good quality, see link below:

D S Automotive

Here is a link to Magnex Exhausts

Magnex - The Official UK Manufacturer Site - Search Results

Personally if i had the money, this is the system i would go for. Maybe some day

AS for exhausts there is a post either in general or mechnaical section were people are talking about 'quieter' exhausts.

The one on mine is quite loud but ill see if i can live with it before looking elsewhere.

Mark

26 hours and 5 mins till i get my scooby

Had a magnex 6x4 oval myself great rumble from it but i prefer a louder roar so i changed it for a Blitz nur spec r cat back system which also comes with a bung for the long motorway driving basicly it goes from being loud to moderate...my mate has the afterburner vortex fitted which is made by hatward&scott pretty good sound from it also.........
