Mechanical or Electrical Gauges???
Hi,
I have an RB5 and have just ordered the 3 gauge pod that replaces the cubby hole on top of the a/c vents. I want to buy matching oil temp, oil pressure and boost gauges and the ones i have seen are, i think electrical...
I have only ever fitted mechanical gauges in the past, but i would like to know how i go about fitting electrical ones, or whether i even can on a classic? How would i go about wiring the abovementioned gauges? Im running a Simtek ECU if that makes any odds...
The gauges i have my eye on are on ebay and are item numbers:
370615105594
221032399541
370609151448
Thank you in advance.

Piece of p*ss, easier than mechanical, since the SENDERS are under the bonnet, and all that comes through the bulkead is the wires.
They should come with senders and full instructions.
Once you have them, post again and we'll advise on fitting.
Edited to say: they look like Defi copies, they ARE electrical and come with senders and instructions.
Go ahead and buy.

From personal experience I would say mechanical every time. I have boost and combined oil temp./oil pressure gauges (Mocal - so not the most expensive!) and they have been totally reliable (that's a fatal thing to say!) over the nine years so far. I also had similar gauges in my previous Impreza and they were four years old when I sold the car.
My son has Prosport gauges in his EVO as has his G/F in her Fiesta ST (inc a boost gauge as it's supercharged.) and they've both had problems. It seems a pretty regular thing to get posts on here about problems with electrical gauges.
If you've fitted and used mechanical ones before, stick to them. Sending small bore vacuum tubes and capillary tubes through the bulkhead is not a lot more hassle than wires

I think it depends on the gauges John.
Prosport seem to have problems with their connectors.
I've not come across anyone with any problems with Defis, except for when they have been wired incorrectly, or with one bloke who seemed to have a VERY old set that had been misused.
Mine are nearly ten years old, (well three of them are) and are fine.
As regards mechnical, I'm not sure I'd want any pipes containing hot oil coming through into the passeneger compartment.......
