Default air/fuel gauge help

doesn't seem to be lighting up on the LED'S to give you a reading. There is power going to it as there is a power light on it, and every now and again the gauge will light up. Then it won't give you a reading for weeks. Does this mean i need a possible new lambda sensor? (if so, what do you recommend for a classic my00 and what difference will it make etc)

probably a really stupid question to be asking but any help is greatly appreciated

thanks.

have you fitted a wideband lambda for the gauge?
did the gauge ever work correctly?

Thatd be my first question: have you fitted a wideband lambda or are you trying to use it with a standard narrow or semi-wideband sensor? As far as Im aware its only going to work with a wideband sensor.

Do you have a narrow or wide band gauge?? I dont know much about wide/narrow band sensors, wouldn't only a wideband gauge require a w/b sensor??
I've been fitting 'cheap' universal lambdas (3 in under a year) on mine since it failed MOT on emmitions, so lesson learnt.
How i knew the lambda had failed was less mpg and the AFR gauge would give minimal reading, every time i fitted a new sensor The AFR gauge would work fine.
In the end i went to
Just Lambda for UK lambda sensor sales
and got a Bosch one (touch wood all seems to be well) A few more £s but 'ya gets what ya pay for.'
Don't know if this helps, but simular experience
