Insurance for a 20y/o on UK spec turbo - Help
#1
Hi, Im after a UK spec turbo R,S or T reg. The obvious problem Ive got is insurance. So far my best quote in a whopping £2600 f/c thats with an excess of £750. At the moment thats what Im going to be paying. Can anyone point me in the direction of a cheaper quote? Ive got three years no claims if that info helps
Thanx in advance,
James

You will be hard pressed to find any decent quotes at 20
Even if you found one thats cheaper they will probably require a tracking system fitted so that will cost you more...
Alot of companies wont touch under 25's and even more wont touch you if your under 30 on a car like this
Try the online quotes with tesco/directline as i feel these will be the cheapest as others like adrian flux/Hyperformance etc will be out of your price range
If you cannot afford the turbo, try for a sport instead, ok the performance isnt the same but still an excellent car for the money
If that doesnt take your fancy, go for the likes of a clio 172, v quick hot hatch and probably much more affordable insurance.

James,
Insurance will be one of the killers for you compared with the car you have now and you wont be able to modify your car (when or if purchased) due to the ammounts it will put on your insurance.
Unlike your VTR the Subaru will cost you 4 times as much per year for servicing, more for fuel (Optimax is recommended here) and its going to be a rather nice target for theives
Tyres will cost you say 300 for a set of 4 (which is about right and 4 is the best way to change them, no crap things on there or your going to be seeing hedge/walls close up )
These are not going to be cheap cars to run so if your looking at a 97-99MY then be warned at the running costs aswell as insurance etc
If you can only just afford the insurance on this car, dont buy it cos they love to be serviced and pampered, abuse this and it will be an expensive job for you to sort out (and FSSH is a must or you wont be able to sell the car on for the book price).
Fast cars have expensive tastes, insurers know this and thats why 17-25 yr olds are high risk group but keep on looking and check out STI Subaru Wannabe's thread re:- post who your insured with, will have names of co's and other bits there for you to look at.
Happy hunting

I pay £850 on my MY00 Turbo, I'm 25 with 5 years NCB and thats with AXA and no tracker needed. The most important points to check are:
a) If you require a tracker - this is gonna cost you around £400 initial install and then maybe another £100 per year subscription fees. So if insurer X offers you £700 with tracker and insurer Y offers you £900 or so without tracker I'd go with Y as it will work out cheaper. Unless you definetely want a tracker installed.
b) Mods. 90% of scoob owners must mod their cars, ranging from different wheels to dump valves and WRC rear spoliers. Some insurers are better when you want to mod so its worth bearing in mind. AXA are good as official manufacturers upgrades (i.e. those listed in the catalogue) dont usually warrant a higher premium.

Cheers for the advice TonyBurns and P1fanatic , gives me a bit to think about. Ive got around 16k to spend on a new/used car and thats got to include insurance. Im not to concerned with modifying the car because Ive been there with the saxo (Fast Car feature in Jan this year). I just want something thats fast turbo'd and in general reliable. How much is the usual service then?
Cheers guys

James,
your looking at 2 services per year, one cheap oil type change and one expensive one, average cost for the oil change is 100 quid, the other can range from 250 to 450 quid depending on which service (mile related/year related).
General stats are from new, 6 month service cost 100 quid (7.5k service) 15k service costs 220 quid(ish) next service is 22.5 or 18 month service which is 100 quid, 30k service (quoted me at 380 quid) 37.5k service is 100 quid, 45k service is 450+ quid, 52.5k service is 100 quid etc, basically every 3 year your going to get the 450+ service, inbetween your going to cop 250 - 380 quid services per year.... that excludes the 100 quid services BTW.

Car is in Fast Car > Its the flip painted, Dimma kitted one, could be Febs issue that came out in Jan. I'll check. Thanx again for the info Tony your a good help. Im still tempted because I can get a lot of the stuff e.g. tyres trade price because I have an uncle in the trade also I know a garage that could cut my cost considerably. Thanks again for the info, one more thing (again) what is the average petrol bill for one of these?

Depends how you drive it James
But my MY00 can quite happily get over 300 miles out of a tank of optimax then again when you play it can be as low as 200 miles out of a tank so upto 30mpg on nice long cruises, as low as 17mpg in town but you normally average 24ish with mixed driving
Optimax or SUL is a must thou!

Think Id end up driving quite quickly to start with then slowing down once the initial fun is over doesnt sound that bad on the fuel > the saxo takes £30 and driven hard can only get 210 miles up to 300 driven nicely. Think thats about all my questions now > need to find me a car and sell the saxo.

James, your insurance should come down significantly over the next couple of years - I got mine last year @ 22 and it was only(!) £930 with Privilege (5years NCB). They seem to be the best for me - just had to make a claim after all my ICE was nicked and the service was excellent. Suppose it depends where you live though, I think I am in a medium-risk area.

I live in a low risk area, not many people around to steal the car really. Hopefully the insurance will come down quickly especially if I drive without incident for a year or two. Still going to get one, just need to sell the saxo

James, got mine with Norwich Union, mind you they made me fit a tracker first. £1100 it was and I`m 35 transfered over from company insurance. (PS my MY00 Turbo is up for grabs sadly if you`re interested on a V)

Yeah, re: economy I don't find the Impreza much worse than my old MKII Golf GTI16V, but it's a hell of a lot quicker . The major difference is the handling - I can't get either of the back wheels off the ground in the Scooby, well not without getting the front ones in the air too
Hope you get a nice one and be careful

I'm 23 and have been quoted £950 a year for a standard UK impreza with Citroen insurance (I have an actual 1 year NCD but they are giving me a 6 year NCD) Problem is, although few people seem to recongnise it, 21 seems to bring about a big drop in insurance. Everyone says 25 is the biggie but I see lots of people post on here aged 30 with full NCD and still paying £800-1000.
BTW are you on saxosportsclub.com?

Off-topic, but worth mentioning for a laugh... There was something in Evo a month or so ago about some England Under-21 footballer who drives a Viper. His insurance is apparently £24,000 per year!

James, I'm 23 and got a pretty decent quote from Direct Line 1350 with 3 years no claims, and 4 points. They do need a tracker though. On that point, if you are planning to buy from a dealer ask if they will do the tracker at cost - around £350 including first years subscription (should be around £600)
