Installing a Double DIN?
Hello guys, I'm hoping to be the proud owner of a 2005 Blobeye next week - and I'm not sure I can survive without my iPod so I'll be taking out the standard stereo in favour of a double DIN unit which can be used to control my iPod amongst other things.
If I were to attempt the install myself, is there an adaptor I'd need to connect the unit to the existing wiring, or any kind of facia / blanking plate?
If it makes a difference - the unit I'm looking at is:
http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/alp-...ve-w530bt.html
I'm pretty sure this should be a job I can tackle myself, but what's the going rate for having somebody install a headunit... just in case

Thanks guys, sounds like even I can do this without messing up.
I guess I can just walk into Halfords and ask for an Iso connector without confusing anybody too much? Is the connector Impreza specific or is it just a generic format?

Oh, and also - how easy will it be for me to route a USB cable from the back of the HU to the inside of the glovebox? Can I drill through without risking any damage to cabling/tubing/etc?

You may need to drill a hole to feed the USB through, it depends on the size of the connector, there are some holes/slots in the back of the glove box that some cables may fit through.
You simply need the subaru/impreza harness adaptor and it'll all be direct fit, the only issue with the adaptor is you end up with a lot of wire behind the stereo - my solution was to buy an ISO socket and cut the connector off the cars loom and convert to ISO. Only do this if you never plan on changing the stereo back!

Hey guys, me again!
I got the headunit and adaptor today, but still no car! I noticed the adaptor has got an earth connection, is there an accessible earth point behind the dash?
Also, what's the recommended or most accessible position for a hands free Mic +
Cheers

The adaptor should just plug in between the cars loom and the iso plug on the stereo loom.
No need for additional earth, can you post a pic of your loom?
Best place for the mic is clipped to the roof lining in the centra of the car - run the lead under the dash then up inside the a piller and across the front of the roof lining.

Thanks BugEye, I'll get a photograph tonight - but the adaptor simply has a black wire attached with a ring connector you would normally find on an earth connection.
The Manual for the unit also suggests you should be attaching an earth.

I located my mic wire next to my sunvisor on the drivers side, I routed it under the footwell and unlipped the (?A-pillar) cover and fed the wiring under there. Easy 5 min job.

Me again!
I got the car today, so fitted the HU - works a treat!
However, it seems the functionality is significantly reduced without a parking brake connection. I can't even access the global settings to change the time/date on the unit!
So I need to either "cheat" the parking break connection, or hook it up for real. Any ideas how easy/hard this is in a Blob - or is it autoelectrician time?

The easiest way to "cheat" the parking sensor is to cut the black wire, buy a plastic electrican cable connector and just place both ends of the black cable and the parking wire into it and everything is sorted.
