Default front speakers my00 uk turbo

Hi all
Finally decided to get rid of the rubbish front speakers from my my00 uk turbo and popped into halfords to which they told me i need 13cm speakers and a extra bracket to mount them.
Is there a certain size speaker i can buy where it will be a case of just removing the old 1 and a direct fit new 1 with no extra brackets?
Ive read the standard fit is 6 or 6.5" so why would i need a 13cm speaker and bracket?
Any help would be appreciated as im far from a audiophile when it comes to the car but cant listen to these standard ones anymore, and far too cold to have window down listning to exhaust
Many thanks

I suggest you take the passenger door card off to see what youve got. My guess is that you probably have a pair of 13cm speakers. To improve the sound significantly you should be looking at a 16-16.5cm set of component speakers. But the problem with this is that the woofer magnets are much bigger than the oem set and so when you wind the window down the glass hits the back of the speaker. The solution is to fit a pair of spacers. The cheapest method is to make a couple of spacer rings from MDF. For my MY03 STi I fitted some Infinity Reference 6030CS component speakers and a pair of Autolead SAK3001 plastic spacers (they are designed for a Corsa but work quite well on the Subaru). Do a search to see what others have fitted.
Spacers were just over £10 for the pair.

^ What he said.

MDF spacers for 16/17cm speakers from ebay or similar. Or destroy the speaker part of the originals and mount the new 16/17cm speakers in the hollowed out frame.

To do it properly, you'd fit 2 way components. You'll need a HU with a meaty amp or a separate amp to feed these enough watts to deafen.

Spacers need to be 12-18mm thick and try to restrict the depth of the speaker to around 60mm.

For info the mounting depth of the 6030CS is just under 50mm so plenty room.
