I have exactly the same problem. I have the standard double DIN stereo at present, but would like to out in a normal single DIN radio. Have pulled the old stereo out to have a look, and it is bolted to a couple of brackets, which in turn bolts to the dash. I have noticed on the lower spec MY01 Impreza's that some of them have single DIN stereos, so it must be possible. I popped into my local stereo shop in Cheltenham and they do not know a kit. I also rang my dealer CD Bramall and the parts guy was not too sure at all. I will be popping in on Saturday to look through the pictures he has of parts and if I get it sorted out I will let you know.

Cool

Just spoke to Listers of Worcester, Subaru do a kit to make the WRK dash take a single DIN like the GX model. It costs £15 so I have ordered one.

I have had the standard unit out on a number of occassions to see what could be done, in the end I have fitted a Kenwood CD multi player. For some reason the sound quality appears to my ears better !!!!

I have checked the dimensions with a Clarion ARX7170R and it should fit provided that we can obtain a single Din for the unit plus a single Din oddment tray.

I had hoped to fit three gauges instead but think it may be a bit tight.

Looking at the Suberu catalogue it would appear that the TS and GX have a single Din unit. The unit is above and a blanking facia is above.

If the unit we get from the dealers is O.K. pleas4e let me know.

All the best,

John Catlin.

I should have said the dealer has taken the single DIN moulding from a GX and still says it wont fit.

Simon,

Have you got an E mail address.

I have looked at the catalogue again and can see no real reason why the units from the GX should not fit.

You will require an adaptor for the head unit, EURO to Subaru, about £10 to change over the leads.

One or two other points I am not prepared to put on the board.

All the best,

John Catlin

Has anyone got the dimension from the front of the double din unit to the back of the unit.

The single din unit I have is 6.5" and from the back of the front panel to the back of the unit is 6.25".

Will try once again to try and fit it to-morrow and see what happens.

All the best,

John Catlin

John, i spoke to Adrian at Listers this afternoon and he told me single DIN in MY01 is no problem, he did one last week, if i finally get my car tomorrow i will visit him, also the Car Hi-Fi Centre in Cheltenham say they should be able to make a bespoke panel if needed and have also recommended J L Audio speakers for the front doors with some custom mounts.

Second time lucky.....

Gents, I assure you that a single DIN unit will fit and there's a pod available to take boost, oil temp and press gauges directly above the stereo.
I have them on my WRX RS (German limited edition).

Yes, it's a VDO Dayton 3200 (probably rubbish but it was free).

Just fitted the Clarion unit into the MY01, absolutely no problem except for the whole where the botton half of the old unit used to be.

Can be filled with blanking plate or another unit.

Seem to think Halford used to do some thing like a tray.

All the best,

John Catlin.

Had my Kenwood mask KDC9090R fitted today by Mobile Audio in Worcester (taken there by Adrian from Listers) it fitted BUT due to the mask feature the front of the unit is larger than standard, so the choice is to either cut away part of the dash panel (5-10mm each side of head unit) or have unit slightly more recessed than normal, i went for the latter option. So be aware that Kenwood Mask single DIN units are not a staight forward swap, but it can be done.

John, the botton half has been fitted with the part from a GX kindly donated by my dealer (Simpsons) only got the car this morning, so far is exactly what i expected/wanted. Sounds, looks, drives the dogs. (WR blue, quickshift, 18" gold P1 wheels, different grill, single boost gauge, WR back box, and bucket seats, blue sills, all for less than £24k and from a UK dealer. why buy a UK300??)

Sorry for being thick - but how can you recess it more if the fronts too wide? do you mean it now sticks OUT more?

Im thinking of the same head unit - in the same car - so id be interested. Did you change the speakers as well?

Yes, I'd be very interested in changing the speakers on the MY01. Anybody know what size speakers you need to get/will fit?

As far as I am aware 165mm speakers will fit.

Depending on what speakers you purchase you may need a spacer ring.

You can either purchase or fabricate one from MDF its up to your self.

PCB,
Are you happy with the installation of your single DIN kenwood now?
I am thinking of getting a MP6090R which is a mask unit and want to be sure it will be ok
Cheers

MarkWRX,
All now fitted, thanks to Cheltenham Car Hi-Fi Centre, the silver surround does need to be cut away for the unit to sit properly, their first attempt was not perfect but good enough for now.

Question

I'm puzzled...

I've just ordered a single din unit that is effectively a coin tray/sun glasses pocket and have already fitted a pioneer headunit flush to the console, I'll post pics when I ve got them back, but its all gone in with out any hassle.

Rgds, Alex

Alex,
As mentioned earlier in post, the problems i have encountered fitting the head unit only (i think) affect Kenwood Mask equipment due to the additional clearance needed for the fascia to rotate.

Doh! weird, cos the pioneer one I have doesn't so much rotate, but does slide open to allow access to the cd slot.

Thanks again for hosting me pics!

I have a MY92 WRX with a DIN sized Kenwood MD unit in it. It would only fit if the bezel surround is not fitted to the front of the radio. Took a bit of getting use to but looks ok now. This may be the same for the newer model Scoobies, happens on a lot of other manufacturers as well.

JVC plus a few others have aftermarket Double DIN radios that should drop straight in otherwise.

PCB, nice installation of radar detector, looks almost std fit. Maybe Subaru could take note

gregh:
'Fraid not, no digital camera yet and some shots captured from a camcorder were rubbish.
One small problem with the gauges is that if you hold the wheel at quarter to three, you can't actually see the boost gauge.... :-(
Asked the dealer to move it to another position and the reply was that the cables are not long enough. Haven't yet worked out how to remove them and check for myself.
